shipping tires to alaska

Hi Folks, Just got a bit of a shock ordering two tires from Dresser Tire. I did the order on line and when I got the invoice the next day the shipping was $130.00. That brought the total for two 8.50x6 tires and two tubes to $531.00. I recomend anybody ordering from them to do it over the phone to avoid sticker shock! Tom

You think a pair of 8.5's is bad try a set of 35's it is getting so bad that we are shipping most of our tires by barge and on pallets with 3 or 4 sets to make it not hurt so much on the shipping.

We ship a lot of volume to Alaska. For bigger items the best deal around is Pacific Alaska Freightways in Fife, WA. Have the merchant ship to them, with instructions to forward to their Anchorage Will Call. In some cases they will also take it to your door, for extra charge. Often saves us upward of $100 on the bigger items. Get a quote at 1-800-426-9940. They like to know the weight and shipment dimensions when issuing a quote. May not save as much on a set of tires, but then, it might. Sailings from Fife are every Wednesday and Friday.

You can send 8.50 tires easily via USPS, via priority mail. Cheap, and works fine. Don't even need to box em, just hang a tag on em.

I always hated dealing with outfits that are too lazy to carry stuff to the post office and mail. They have been spoiled by UPS and FedEx, who only do second day air (how you spell $$) to AK. And that sucks as well.

Just got some tires from Desser and they hit me with the charge for ground shipping. I called Tony back and he said sorry for the mistake and took the charge off. Don't know what the hit is for Alaska, but Desser doesn't charge for basic ground shipping on tire orders. Give them a call!

tires to alaska

Hi Guy's:
Let me catch up, The tires are AirTrac's, the Goodyears are up to $191.00 ea., the trac's are 139.00.
Mike you are right on, the usps, got hell from my daughter too as she and her husband work for them. Also I fly freight for Duey,Hughey&Louie.
I did get back to Dresser and they are deverting the shipment to my northern NY address and I'm going to carry them to AK in Mar. when I have a trip to ANC. I will still have to pay a fee to divert them of around $40.00. Still better than $130.00. I should have known better. Thanks for the inputs, Tom

Mike--

For shipping with USPS they work great and for the most part are some times as fast or faster! But.... the tracking is worthless and when a coustomer calls and says "Where are my packages" it makes it worth the extra $$$$$ to tell them they are at "X" and will be there this afternoon vs uumm here is a tracking number and after you get your package you will be able to track it and know you got it.... as they don't scan your packages at every stop so you never know where it is 'till it's there. so with that in mind we do use USPS for non-critical shipments everyday.

Also what Mike says is true on the DON'T box them it will almost double the cost of shipment as most carriers go by dimentional weight not physcal weight.

FWIW, just shipped up a 130lb Avon boat, boxed and from the dealer's door (in Seattle) to Wasilla with Span Alaska. $102.00 It will arrive Tuesday. What a luxury, knowing when something will arrive up here.

Tagging on...

Save your 8.50 casings. Desser will recap them for $65 each, and ship them back to you free. I wrap them together with clear, Scotch brand, Packaging Tape. USPS charged me $19 from NV to SoCal. Two essentially new Goodyear 6PR tires for $149, i.e. it's a good deal.

If you want them recapped, pull them before they show cord though.
