Sightseeing in ANC

I got to make a short trip to ANC for the first time recently. I'm sure for you guys that live up that way it's just business as usual, but for me it was like going to Oshkosh without the porta-potties. Here are a few cell-phone pics from a bicycle ride around lake Hood. Just imagine the same scenes over and over again for 30 minutes of riding, plus parking lots full of wheel planes and pieces of planes as far as the eye can see.

From there I rode to Merrill to visit with Dan S. and see his Subaru-powered Bearhawk, and some of the perhaps 500 other interesting planes there.

For someone who likes little planes, especially fabric, tailwheel, and floatplanes, Anchorage is a fantastic place to see them.

Nice shots!

For us outsiders, it's a little overwhelming. I could have spent a month roaming Lake Hood but I had to remind myself to eat and work.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

Re: Sightseeing in ANC

Anchorage by far is my favorite layover. I have walked countless times around Lake Hood when our company put us up at the Millennium and when they moved us downtown I walked to Merrill often. Later a few of us pooled our money and bought a chevy blazer that extended my travels to Talkeetna and other airports just to hang around.
