Re: Simple lesson for us all...

Personally, I wouldn't use the sealant stuff, mainly because it is messy and only works on small punctures.

Reality; when any of my tailwheels went the tube burst from a hole in the tire. It really wasn't salvageable. However, a mountain biking tip that would work. Carry a spare tube if the extra wheel is out of your budget. Also carry a Tyvek FedEx envelope. Cut the Tyvek to cover the rip, tear worn hole in your tailwheel that the tube aneurism popped out of. Use a generous amount so it goes a distance either side of the hole and up the sidewalls a ways. Use multiple layers. Then use a bike CO2 inflater to fill the tire to about 1/2 to 1/3 the recommended pressure. This should get you home. You may have $20 in this kit, not much more than the slime approach and a much better chance to work in more situations.

It may be sacrilege, but I've used Fix a flat...

The mountain biking trick is to use a 1$ bill. If you ride a carbon frame bike you use benjis. Skateboarders use candy wrappers.

Stans No Tubes is available bulk - but it won't work well if there's a tube being used. You have to get the liquid inside the tube - which require removing the valve core - another potentially specific tool you need to carry with you. I think a patch is better and more lightweight solution if you have a tube already.

I question the sanity of trying to pump up a 31" AK Bushwheel with a bicycle pump, though. Is that what you guys carry in your kit?

Word is Honda has a super little compressor on the Goldwings, light and powerful. Desperate enough I could do the job with the bike pump, but yeah there is a lot of air in those tires!

I use no tubes in my tube mtb and trailer tires all the time; works well but yes you have to remove the valve core. It doesn't freeze and I've never experienced a tire imbalance like I have with slime. I put it in my tires before a flat occurs. I agree that a patch is better once a flat has occurred. If I was landing off airport all the time I'd put no tubes in the tires from the get go. I used a livestock syringe from CAL Ranch to get it in the tubes.

It is not fast but about 50 strokes for a 31" Bushwheel, I have not had to do a 35" yet. I have done the 31" with a patch over the outside of the tire of two holes that were 1/4" diameter holes.

I wonder if one of those bellows pumps that you pump up your Avon inflatable boat would develop enough pressure to do the job on ABW tires?

Probably not. Those are high volume very low pressure pumps that work well on micro pressured devices with large filling orifices . Tire valves are restrictive in comparison and require a higher pressure behind them to force enough volume to fill a tire in a reasonable amount of time.
