Sister OR Grand Re-opening

FYI,

Sisters, OR (K6K5) has a brand spanking new runway and is having a grand opening: see http://sistersair.com for more info on Fly-in, pancake breakfast, classic car show etc.

Should be a good time for all. This is the home by the way of tailwheeltown (www.tailwheelersjournal.com) and at least one Bearhawk project (mine) which all BCP's are welcome to come see.

Wow! Looks like a lot going on over there and you guys are doing a lot to attract pilots to the area! I may have to hop over for the breakfast!

Re: Sister OR Grand Re-opening

I remember Sisters. First cross country after I got my PP certificate in '09. Wife and I went to Sisters for the weekend and had a great time. Was all concerned about the narrow runway for a newbie pilot but turned out to be no big deal. Like a lot of things you unconciously bring up the level of your performance to meet the demands of the environment. Almost smacked a bald eagle while in the pattern to land. Great town to visit, will have to go back.

Re: Sister OR Grand Re-opening

I love Sisters it is a beautiful place but I refused to fly in because of the landing fee charge. Hopefully they dropped the landing fee? They will get a lot more business. It is such a nice place :D wish I could join you, best of luck !

There are no prices listed on the web? What fees?

Sounds like some things are changing over there! Hopefully landing fees are one of them!

Re: Sister OR Grand Re-opening

I think it was $5 or $10 per night when I landed there.

Parking fees are one thing for overnights, landing fees are an entirely different beast. I guess we should find out which it is, I'd like to check it out. Sisters is a neat area.

Re: Sister OR Grand Re-opening

As most of you know I am involved with keeping Pacific City airport open. In the process I found out that for Sisters to do this major upgrade they were able to tap into a pool of money. It is called Connect Oregon. I don't know all the details. I heard Sisters lobbying effort was top notch. Good for them! I think they got in the neighborhood of 600K

Re: Sister OR Grand Re-opening

I'm pretty sure there is no landing fee and maybe not even an overnight fee. The new owner of the airport is very committed to making Sisters an attractive destination for pilots. Other new "amenities" per the airport info page include courtesy car, self serve fuel station, and bicycle checkout. It is a short ride (3/4mile) into down town so the bikes are a great alternative.

Re: Sister OR Grand Re-opening

Just verified with the airport manager.

Landing fee is "Abolished"
There is a nominal overnight tiedown fee of $10.

They / we are definitely working to make this an attractive pilot destination.

Watch the crosswinds - although not a true "mountain strip" it certainly isn't like landing at KHIO either and is a good place to jump off to some of the other forest service strips.

Re: Sister OR Grand Re-opening

Steve, thanks for the heads up. Not sure I'll be at the pancake breakfast but I'll be there poking my head around the aeroplanes and cars. Hope to see you and others there!
