Slick mags on c-85 misfiring

Just finishing up the annual on the plane. Had a heck of a time getting the right mag timed. Fired up the plane and it ran real rough. Switch to right mag the engine dies. Switch to left runs the same as if on both, rough. Retimed and got the same thing. Did some checking and seems that #4 is firing at #1 TDC. Wires are in the right place and cap is on the right way, only goes on one way.

Thinking the shop put them back together as left hand mags when they did the 500 hour inspection and replaced the points. Any other thoughts?

Ain't no need to be sayin suff like that just cuz I don't go to your old man anymore for my annuals. Frank didn't do the mags. He does good work and is a real friendly guy.

It was a friendly jab. Frank is a nice enough guy. He actually got some stuff from my old man yesterday for your plane.

Re: Slick mags on c-85 misfiring

Whee..maybe need to check the mag timing itself..if the points don't open at the same time as the magnetic flux is the greatest, the mag itself won't fire. This can happen if the point gap was changed without retiming the mag. Friend of mine had this happen this winter after his mags had been "rebuilt"...had to retime both mags and then test run them on a mag checker machine.Once this was done, put them back on the engine and retimed the mags to the engine...all worked just fine. Also the right mag & the left mag have an indicator on the interrupter (cam) as to what direction the mag should turn (right or left). Hope this helps.
