The UBCP / Friends Of Skypark Fly In will be at Smiley Creek (http://www.airnav.com/airport/U87) Idaho, July 13-15, 2012. This get together is co-sponsored each year by our home airport, Bountiful Skypark and UBCP. This year, the Smiley Creek Lodge is catering a lasagna diner Saturday evening at 6:30pm. The diner is free but donations to UBCP are always appreciated. Every one is invited.
If you arrive the day before join us at the campground Friday evening for socializing and appetizers. BYOB.
Although not required, we would appreciate it if people who are planning on coming send an email or call (contact info on the image below) with the expected number of people who will be there for dinner on Saturday. It will help us make sure we have enough food.
If you have not been there, Smiley Creek is one of the most beautiful landing strips in the country. The grass surface is suitable for most airplanes. Plan to arrive early and leave early at this high altitude location. Airplanes typically land south and take off north. The landing strip rises slightly toward the south. Announce your intentions on 122.9 and be on the lookout for other traffic as this is a popular location. There are free hot showers and a nice grass camping area with tables. You can set up your tent next to your airplane if you like. The Smiley Creek Lodge does not have any vacancies available during the fly-in but does have a restaurant, basic groceries and auto fuel. It is about a 300 yard walk from the landing strip to the lodge. There are a few tie downs, but they typically fill up fast, so bring your own. Afternoon gusty winds occur on most days and thunderstorms are not uncommon.
If the caretaker is watering the runway, it will be marked with cones. They water along its length one half at a time. It is plenty wide to land on the half with no sprinklers running.
Smiley Creek is the traditional gateway to the Idaho back country and several landing strips are nearby for varying experience levels – perfect for an early morning fly out. We are looking forward to meeting old friends and making new ones and hope you can come.
