The faster I go , the farther behind I get.

That's now residing on the front of Robert Odegaard's Super Corsair at least until it's delivered to it's new owner. Gorgeous restoration.

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

Re: So you like radials?

I knew a fellow that had a pair of these still sitting in the governemnt sealed containers. He offered them to me nearly two years ago for $1,000 each and I turned them down. The cost of the plugs for one engine alone would be more than I would have paid for both engines and I would have had to find the carbs and all the accessories not to mention I do not have anything to mount them on. We thought about using one as a display and mounting it on a trailer to run it for airshows and events.

Long story made short, Gary passed away shortly after he offered them to me and I tried to obtain them from the estate, but was unsuccessful and have no idea where they would up. Another opportunity that I kick myself for passing up.

What's the startup procedure on one of those, anyway? Sounded like the starter motor was engaged and turning for several seconds prior to actual start. Does the start occur when mixture goes rich?

It (hopefully) starts when the mags go hot. You count a set number of blades before switching the mags on...gotta check for hydro lock and lube the cylinders & bearings before intruducing the heat & friction of a running engine. It is a busy start sequence...hold start button, count blades, switch Mags to ON, continue pushing start button while simultaneously flipping the ignition boost and prime switch. Once it fires you release the ignition boost and prime switched while continueing to hold the start switch and increase the throttle to keep her alive...release the start button and adjust the mixture as needed once she is running. Too much throttle too early, Mags too late, or releasing the starter too early can result in a fire belching backfire.

A buddy of mine is partners in this one...lots of fun to fly.

That is a simple procedure compared to the startup for the Antonov. The first time I got a chance to fly it I was worn out by the time we got her started. LOL

I always loved test cell work...especially at night! Then you could watch the rings seat in the exhaust flames.

Yes there is a flywheel that builds up kinetic energy before it actually engages the crankshaft. The starter motor alone can't roll it over, but can keep it turning. Many big radials use that system. A few old radials (and one co-axial turboprop i can think of) used a black powder cartridge charge to roll it over.

Glad everyone is enjoying the video's. Recent views went from a couple hundred up to over 2000 in a few days. I am still working on my video skills, some of the videos are a bit grainy/shakey at times and I need a better mount in the 180.

If anyone is ever stopping through Grangeville and wants a tour let me know.
