SoCal Desert Flying - Saturday 5/13/17

Looking to fly places tomorrow if anyone want to fly along. Message me for details or post here.

The route I am thinking is linked. Destinations (land and overfly; aggressive so expecting to only maybe make half of these):
"X-15" (Cool new spot)
Shoshone (see cave cabins)
Death Valley Junction (Amaragosa Opera House)
Ruby's Store, NV (Lunch)
Jackass Airport, Amaragosa Valley, NV (MoGas if needed)
Beaty, NV (if time)
Rhyolite, NV (may not work)
Bonnie Claire Dry Lake, NV
Gold Point, NV (big ghost town like Bodie)
Lida, NV
Thule, NV
Dyer, NV
Fisk Lake Valley, NV
Bishop, CA
Manzanar, CA (if time)

Early morning start hopefully. Meeting at CalCity (L71).

Re: SoCal Desert Flying - Saturday 5/13/17

I might be able to make a couple of places on the list, likely not all. Got some other stuff to do in the afternoon. What and where is is "X-15" and can I get my 172 in/out of there on 145HP with 3/4 fuel?

That Skyvector map you linked to has a large area of moderate to severe turbulence... is that for today, tomorrow, or last week?

Justin what time are you arriving or leaving Cal City?

Planning to takeoff from Cal City at 7; try to get places early before it gets too hot.

I think you'll be ok with standard wheel. The other plane coming along is an Ercoupe.

Re: SoCal Desert Flying - Saturday 5/13/17

They're predicting it to be breezy in the desert (surprise!!!), may not be a real good day to be on the east side of the Panamint/Sierra mountain ranges in the second half of your route???

If I can get out there early I will try to come along for at least some part of it. But we can have a crappy marine layer early in the morning that makes it impossible to get out of the LA basin.

Re: SoCal Desert Flying - Saturday 5/13/17

Looks to me like the big winds will be south of the Fremont Valley area. So hopefully not too bad further north. May have some north winds (headwinds) between Shoshone and Beatty area though. But yeah, the ride from TSP to L71 may be a bit quick.
