SoCal Stinson or Straight tail 182

Anybody know of examples of either within reasonable driving distance of Camarillo?

I'm back in the process of airplane shopping and have fairly well come down to either a big engine Stinson 108 or an early 182. I'd really like to crawl around in or even better take a ride in both to help me as well as the Mrs. feel out which suits us better.

any leads appreciated.

I have flown both and depends on your need, 182 has a lot more room and is faster, Stinson is tail wheel so will operate out of rougher strips and sells for less. I know of a 175 in excellent condition with an 0470 low time engine that will fly with the 182's and I believe owner is asking 39,500. It is located in Wa. No connection to me.

You've probably already seen this if you've been looking but there's a 220 Franklin powered 108-2 for sale in Smith Nevada on TAP.

Re: SoCal Stinson or Straight tail 182

Big John- thanks for the input, I'm looking for something I can build hours and abilities with and down the road use to work in potentially rough areas. Trying to avoid buying the proverbial "time builder" and then fool with selling said time builder and finding a plane to use for work in a couple years. The slower 108 would maybe be better for building time since it'll take longer to get everywhere I go :) but that time building will happen more easily if I can throw Mama and Jr. (1 y.o.) in and go someplace. Will the room in a 182 make that difference? I don't know. I'm pretty sure that an hour climbing around in each won't completely tell the tale but I feel its my due diligence to at least try to do so.

Rob- the plane you mentioned is mighty tempting, but having the full buy off from my partner in crime (wife) will make for a lot nicer home life once the purchase is made. Maybe I'll try to get up there in the next few weeks and take a look.

Wasn't there a Stinson driver on BCP from Santa Barbara? I've searched user profiles and cant seem to come up with said member.

Re: SoCal Stinson or Straight tail 182

182. All metal. Rugged simple spring gear albeit with a somewhat fragile nose gear attachment. Designed for the 0-470 from the get go. Stinsons are favored by a somewhat idiosyncratic crowd while the 182 is more of a benchmark airplane. So many mods available for the Cessna that the mind boggles. I just don't think it's a fair comparison actually. I might think about a Lycoming powered Stinson maybe but then there are quite a few 180hp Lyc powered C175s around for similar money. By the time you get into a big continental powered Stinson you could of had a Maule if you insist on the tailwheel.

$.02 and worth it.

Guys, he's looking for help finding examples to LOOK at, not opinions of which to buy.

Anyone in his neighborhood with one or the other he could look at??

Re: SoCal Stinson or Straight tail 182

Contact BCP member 182 STOL driver. He has friends in Arizona with Stinsons, and he has friends with 182's. He informed me about a nice 182, but we don't know if that's for sale yet or not.

If you don't already know about it, hop over to Santa Paula and get a copy of the "Aviator's Bulletin" newspaper, which I recall has several of each type listed in recent months. Someone there will have a copy of it, or ask Rowena how to get in touch with the guy who publishes it. It's the same guy who owns(ed) Santa Paula Flight Center.

I agree, Bill "182 STOL driver" has been great. As a matter of fact, he is in North Carolina right now where he just finished the pre-buy on my new (to me) 1957 182. As soon as the weather clears he will be flying her back to the west coast for me.
