Re: Solar/battery runway lighting

I can't vouch for these as I didn't buy any, but saw this style at Harbor Freight the other day. Reminded me of centerline lighting. I can't vouch for their quality or brightness, but looked like it might have potential. I think they were around $5 each.

I couldn't find them on Harbor Freights website but these are identical...and these actually come in different colors.

Re: Solar/battery runway lighting

I have 4 of these that I recieved through a testing program with the EAA.
www.brightportalresources.com/Home_Page.html

They are essentially the same as jmd4j posted a link to. I can say the ones I have are very well made and you can run over them with a tractor and not hurt them. Highly visible and a guy could take a handful with him out in the boonies and lay them out if he were to verture out on a hunting/fishing excursion and mark his territory. :)

Thanks, just ordered a white flat one and the red beacon to test for a bit, will be AK for awhile so should be able to see how they work in adverse conditions.

Re: Solar/battery runway lighting

I like the looks of the bright portal ones. The dual colored ones will work great for threshold lights. Build a stand so they are up out of the grass and they should work great. This may sound like a dumb question, but you guys that have used them, which way do yoy face bulbs? Parallel with the strip, or across?

Re: Solar/battery runway lighting

Parallel down the strip ,I spaced them every 500' and the threshold i have the red and green lights.
green on approach and red on departure. I've used deferent types of reflectors over the years, But these have been working great.

Re: Solar/battery runway lighting

Does anyone have this type of runway marker cones installed? I'm wondering if you could rig up a way to install/mount these flat LED lights onto the top flat portion of these markers?

I'm sure you could just glue them on top? Maybe not...

It looks like it'd be simple enough.

I ordered 4 of the white ones and they are working great now. I put them up in late fall and they never had enough sunlight to fully charge and stay lit all night. The initial charge has to be a good one. Now that they have gotten a good charge they are working great, and I'll most likely be picking up 2 more white ones and maybe a couple red/green ones for the end of the strip.

Bright Portal lights the way— runway that is!

Imagine an energy efficient product that enables you to effectively and efficiently light up your property. Meet BrightPortal Resources, a solar-powered LED lighting company that uses the sun’s energy and super energy-efficient LEDs to light up your landing strips. These new and innovative fixtures are very effective in lighting up remote areas in the absence of electricity.

BrightPortal brings together solar power technology that can power an LED light for 24 to 30 hours. The resilient batteries are molded into each unit to enable a smooth and continued operation. The fixtures are low profile and designed to easily mount directly on asphalt or concrete. The units are particularly effective in poor weather conditions, as the bright LED penetrates through fog or mist and provides enhanced visibility. The units are maintenance-free, work efficiently and are reliable for many years.

Bob Garrett with Garrett Flying Service in Danbury, Texas was the first ag-operator to use the solar-powered LEDs on his ag-strip. Bob comments: “I have used [Bright Portals] photo cell runway lights for two years and I am very pleased with them. They are low profile, very visible and you don’t have to worry about running over lights when mowing and they are always on at night.
Grant Lane, Lane Aviation in Rosenberg, TX: “We needed an inexpensive solution to finding the airstrip at night. Being familiar with my airport, I could always get somewhat close and adjust at the last minute to be lined up down the runway. With the solar-powered Bright Portal LEDs, I can now line up as far out as a mile. We marked the main part of the runway with white lights and the touch down zone with green. Near the end we installed red lighting. They do exactly what I want them to do and I don’t have to worry about wiring or mower damage.”

David Glover, from Arkansas gives his take on the Bright Portal family of solar-powered lights: “This product fits the ag -aviation market like a glove! Literally installs with a torch in a matter of minutes. I have 1500 feet of cement runway; we set-up our Bright Portals before lunch! The come on at dusk and run all night! I have been looking for something to help for those days you just ran a little later than you would like; then I found this product. I’ve had the lights running all of the 2011 season with no problems or maintenance! I can’t say enough good about Bright Portal LED lighting!”

It works well. Half of JFK has these! There are actually lots of airports in the US as well as countries like Haiti where power can be absent that use this for runway/taxi markings. Most have no light associated with them.
