Solder Bar plane crashes

Was reading the FAA accident report for today and saw where a PA-18 was totaled at Solder Bar on the 23rd. A guy from back east, 2004 Cub. Also couldn't believe my eyes when the next report said a Widgeon from Alaska crashed on Solder Bar yesterday, the 25th. Got to be a misprint, no way would a guy try to get a Widgeon in to Solder Bar. Any of you heard about either one of those?

Wow... and I thought a Mooney into Soldier Bar was crazy. I talked to my dad and he did see a turbine Widgeon at McCall when he was flying back to Washington on sunday... Wonder if its the same one.

Crazy?? The pilot in question knows his plane and how to get the most out of it, obviously. Talented and aggressive yeah, crazy, no.

I was joking when I said crazy, all I meant was a Mooney at soldier bar is something you don't see everyday. I'm good friends with Bryan and have flown with him a lot, and I was there when he went into Soldier Bar. I've seen him put that plane a lot of other places too that I'm sure no other pilot with a similair type plane would even think of. He's a pretty damn good pilot if you ask me.

We know all kinds of stuff about the Idaho back country and we are on radio silence.

Once the FAA knows we may run our mouths a bit more but please don't add fuel to the fire these are our friends. The SC is one of the finest men you will ever meet in your life, a true gentleman in his early 80s. I am honored to call Bobby my friend and to have the privilege to have flown with him.

I whole hardily agree with robw56, Bryan, is one heck of a stick! He can make that Mooney TALK! The people at Mooney should be paying him as promotional as to what their planes can do! At least some landing gear bushings or free dog food for co-pilot Jesse, but only the good stuff! We seen Bryan, his co-pilot and passenger Stacie come into the Flying B after us. I was AMAZED! And on top of that he is a nice guy! Hope to see you guys back there next year or sooner! =D>

Re: Solder Bar plane crashes

I own a Husky and an 87 Mooney 201. No way would I take my Mooney into Soldier Bar  , though I've I've been there a number of times and know full well that I am capable of getting the Mooney in and out safely. I don't think it would do the plane much good as that isn't what the plane was designed for.

The Mooney has trailing link gear (good), and I've replaced the shock disks on mine as they age and get stiff over time. Still, the Mooney's gear travel is not long and the Mooney's wet wings can be an issue, being notorious for weeping and leaking if the sealant starts to fail - - which is exascerbated by rough use. That, and prop clearance is hardly what one would call excessive. I don't think Al Mooney had backcountry flying in mind when he designed the Mooney as a fast, effecient traveling machine.

The Husky is a whole 'nuther story.

Re: Solder Bar plane crashes

most all don't :!: And given "most" (but obviously not all) pilot and plane limitations, that's fine. You'll seldom see a surgeon using a scalpel to cut firewood.

This is not the Mooney you are looking for...it must be a mirage.

I hope that anyone who looks at this pic and sees a Mooney there will still give the airfield the respect it deserves... [-X
