SOLDOTNA ALASKA ALERT: Aircraft Thieves

You can easily bypass the mag switch by cutting the p leads which immediately makes the mags hot.

I guess you could put one on your starter, but locks are just there to keep honest people honest.

Even with a kill switch on your starter circuit, they could just hand prop after cutting the p leads and your plane is off and running.

Re: SOLDOTNA ALASKA ALERT: Aircraft Thieves

There's a variety of locks, often marketed to cyclists, that can be put on the propeller to immobilize an airplane, and they're not very expensive. While each type (chain, cable, linked blocks of steel) can be defeated, it takes time and specialized tools. Put one of each on the prop and a person would have to want your plane pretty bad to spend the time getting them off. Throw a blanked over your prop so someone cant see what's on there and plan ahead...

It's really not that hard to make your airplane less attractive to steal than someone else's, and that's generally all it takes.

Without electricity starting a fuel injected engine offers a challenge. Remove the battery's help to pressurize the fuel injection with whatever switching or disablement. Yes the mags will fire if combustibles like starting fluid are available and the grounds are disconnected. But then what and how far can they travel? Stealing the panel contents for a quick sale makes more sense.

If it has a Shower of Sparks ignition system, you need to make sure to add another important step. ,-)

Flown out of Soldotna many times. I suspect, what this sounds like is not someone looking for a plane to steal but a repo agent looking to repo one. That's why he asked about the N number.
