Re: Solitude - Camping with an airplane

I spent a lot of time in the Three Creek area fighting fires with the BLM. Both videos sure brought back some great memories and the sounds of home. I need to get an appropriate plane so I can play in that area.

How long is the runway there and what is the elevation ? Do you have to have permission to camp ?

I dare not say. Nothing personal or disrespectful intended. Loose lips sink ships, I'd hate to sink your ship.

Looks pretty easy on the video. Think I'll give it a try in my 182 after I get it flying again :D . Would love to explore that area

You didn't hear it from me!

The first place he landed by the homestead is at

42.1754, -115.683

Looking at it on google earth indicates about 800 to 900 ft long at 4450 ft. elevation. Too short for my mighty O-300 powered 172 at that altitude.

The homestead is one half mile due north of the landing site. You can see the homestead site when he flies out, it's at the base of the white cliff with the tall trees.

There's another homestead two miles up the river, but no handy landing site that's close. I don't know if he showed pictures from just one of them or both, because I've never been there, but a friend of mine has and I've always wanted to go visit them.

Re: Solitude - Camping with an airplane

Yeah, airplane camping...
Just got back from a week+ of bombing around the boonies in N. BC & the Yukon. What a hoot, especially for me, the first time away from home for a long trip. VERY expensive gas, when you can find it, but the folks everywhere took great care of us. All the gas I burned, divided by the GPS flight time came out to 5.3 (Canuck) gals/hr. That's a bit over 6 US gals. I'm a happy camper! Most expensive was over $12/gal, but again that's the bigger gallon tho. GULP!! $2.75 +tax/liter.

Didn't see much game tho, but a cow moose w/calf chased my partner out'a his fishin' hole. We stopped at a lake called Trout lake, and caught grayling, lake trout & pike but no trout. :) Found some terrific camp spots & only got pinned down by wind for 1 day. Almost no rain & had skeeters in some spots, but none in others. Lots of varied terrain to gawk at & recommended spots to look for. We had a great time.

I got home on Wed, and then on Thurs. had to go to 108 Mile House (that'sa town) to do the BC Floatplane AGM & weekend. Had enough flying for awhile but am already wondering what I'll do next. :)

Re: Solitude - Camping with an airplane

Great thread, guys!

Nice Rob, looks like a fun place to get away from it all and do a little fishing. What type of fish is in the river? Trout? How about some pictures of them?

I figure you can't catch them already cooked  ,
But is the hot water as it comes out of the hill hot enough to cook'em after you catch'em?

Pretty convenient.....

Great stuff!! I especially like the takeoff at the end with the steam rising next to the runway. Glad you had fun, and thanks for sharing it with the rest of us.
