Re: Solved after 70 years;Lancaster crew

Fantastic...this hits close to home. My grand father, who is still alive, was with Bomber 126 and was shot over Holland on their 3rd night raid. Their Lanc ended up crashing in a river, only he and his partner lived, the other 5 had jumped out of their burning plane and landed their chute in the water...without lights at night, they drowned now knowing which direction to swim to. My grand father and his partner were too cocky to tie up their chute on the wall by the main entrance door so after their port engine was shot and the plane was quickly falling in flames, the G force sent their chute (which they had just thrown on the ground) flying up towards the tail. They climbed up, put it on,jumped out and landed in a cow field. They gained local farmer's trust and he lived underground for one year.

Years later, the river they had crashed into dried up. The locals discovered a cemetery full of parts and human remains. They located bomber 126! A local picked up a part of the bomb assembly (10'' part of the mechanism used to hold the bombs in place), cleaned it up, shined it and mailed it to grand pa. It is now sitting on a shelf above the TV with a small "thank you plaque" from the local folks whom he's visited several times.

Grand pa never wore his ceremonial uniform every again, ashaimed of the lives that were taken but always made a point of flying back to Holland for every significant anniversary, 50th, 60th, etc. to thank the people who saved him.

Just one of thousands of stories that hopefully will never be lost. BCT
