Source for inertia reels

Anyone know where to find the more compact inertia reels for 2" seatbelt webbing? The AmSafe ones are perfectly sized but they're also fairly proud of them, as the price reflects.

Even among the auto industry retail outlets, I am having a hard time finding compact units. The Corbeau reels are HUGE.

Re: Source for inertia reels

I had good luck finding a set of Amsafe reels on eBay once. Replaced the webbing with what I wanted and was happy.

Re: Source for inertia reels

I've bought several of Ebay for very little money and were in great shape. One was with the BAS bracket and was $75, included the entire belt/buckle assembly including the nuts and bolts to attach to my 170.

Dunno about just the reel, but CubCrafters has pretty good prices on shoulder harness / lap belt sets.

I don't want to buy a harness set. I want only the reel. I prefer it to NOT be AmSafe. I only used them as an example of compact reel design.

I've use Seat Belts Plus before for my old car projects. Quality was fine.

Re: Source for inertia reels

The belts I bought from Aero-Tuff use Hornling reels. I tried to get the manufacture to sell me a few reels but didn't have any luck. IDK how the size compares to AmSafe but I thought they were decently small.

Re: Source for inertia reels

Hooker Harness has inertia reels. I do not know the size. They also have electric and mechanical locking reels. If you know you are going to crash you can lock the reels and pull the shoulder belts real tight.

Re: Source for inertia reels (question on lockers)

These look like NIB Amsafe reels, but they have what looks like a lockout mechanism for locking out the free-reeling action. Question for anyone who's worked on these, maybe in the military: Can I disconnect/remove the lockout and have them work as a standard inertia reel? I'm imagining it as a pawl/dog like thing that engages a ratchet to actively lock it. Without it, normal operation. ????

Note: I'm not interested in this set of harnesses, just details of the operation of the lockout reel. Thanks!

Re: Source for inertia reels

Bill Rusk over on the super Cub site used a source for remanufactured airline belts and inertia reels. I remember his seat belts looking very nice. Maybe you could ask him.

Also, does Schroth sell the inertia reels you are looking for? I know they sell them I’m just not sure if it is what you want.

Re: Source for inertia reels

I bought an AmeSafe reel like that 5 or so years ago thinking it was an inertia with a lockout.
It ended up being off a fork lift and was just a lockout, no inertia

Hmm...thanks for the seed of doubt. Was it really old? Or a newer product?

It looked new but was in a unmarked plastic bag. (description said from a fork lift)
It was a single shoulder style and I remember thinking how useless a harness would be if I had to remember to flip a lever to make it work.

I just got my new nifty Cessna Secondary Seat Stop in the mail and the inertial reel in the kit looks EXACTLY like the one in the photo and works opposite of the one I mentioned earlier. The cable provides a lockout when engaged and inertia reel as normal when removed.
