Specialty aviation license plate coming to Idaho

BOISE, Idaho — Aviation enthusiasts would be latest group to get their own specialty license plate in Idaho, under a bill introduced in the state Legislature.

The "Fly Idaho" plate, which would raise money to maintain, upgrade and develop airstrips in the Idaho backcountry and at recreational airports.

Each plate costs $35 and of that amount, $22 would go to the Idaho Aviation Foundation. Renewals would carry a $25 fee, with $12 going to the foundation.

What plane would you like to see on the plate?

Re: Specialty aviation license plate coming to Idaho

I'll throw a vote in for a cessna tail dragger, But maybe just a more generic looking tail dragger would be less controversial. Sounds pretty neat though.

Re: Specialty aviation license plate coming to Idaho

Looks great..and for a great cause. I would even buy a vanity plate even though I'm not in the state.
Just make sure they don't put a Maule on the plate..a generic Cub type would be just fine.

The faster I go , the farther behind I get.

Re: Specialty aviation license plate coming to Idaho

That's a great idea. Wish more states would adopt that thinking, and actually put the money to work on their backcountry strips.
I'd vote for the Cub, Seems to be the traditional pick of the litter for backcountry fun.

Any generic taildragger gets my vote, I could live with a Maule or a Cub also, close enough! I want a set for the crane. A business expense that way :D

Re: Specialty aviation license plate coming to Idaho

Yee Haw!!! It's going to be available after Jan 2, 2012!!

Aviation License Plates Available In January

Starting January 2, aviation enthusiasts will have a new way to
display their love for flying in Idaho. By purchasing a “Fly Idaho”
license plate, they also will be supporting organizations that
work to preserve and enhance the airstrips that help make Idaho
a special place for pilots.
In addition to the regular registration fee, the specialized plates
will cost an extra $35 initially, $25 at renewal. Customized
numbers and letters, such as an aircraft’s N number, will cost
another $25 initially, $15 at renewal. Sample plates, suitable for
hanging on your wall (but not your vehicle), will be available for
$30. Roughly half of the license plate sales proceeds will go to
the Idaho Aviation Foundation and the Idaho Airstrip Network,
sponsors of the program. The rest will stay with the Idaho
Transportation Department for administration purposes.
The plates will be available at the usual county vehicle
registration offices and on line at http://itd.idaho.gov, dmv
online services.

Oregon has several vanity plates. I think they use the money to build bike paths, advertisements to discourage motor vehicle use, and buy medical pot for aging hippies.

God day

California could use some income. On my last trip home I noticed that LAX needs a grass runway.

When I lived in Oregon, I had a "non-profit" plate, although it just had a state-assigned four letter code, so not a personalized plate. I think one of the reasons so many people have special plates in Oregon is that many only have a one-time fee associated fee, with no special renewal fees. For example, my "Share the Road" (with bicycles) plate was only an extra $10 when I got it. Renewals were the same as everybody else. Not all plates were that way, but my particular one was.

Idaho, on the other hand, has a zillion plates available. And all at significantly higher fees. There's actually so many plates available that some don't have enough to meet the annual requirement to stay in production - if not enough people opt for them, they go away as options. At last count, I think there were over 30 active plate choices... So, if you want it, get it when it's available!

That said, an aviation plate would be really cool for my Willys Jeep (whenever it finally gets up here). I'm going to be getting a personalized plate for it anyway, so it's just a matter of choosing which special plate to get. :D

Re: Specialty aviation license plate coming to Idaho

Just an FYI to save you a phone call.
If any of my Idahoan flying friends have been trying to order the new aviation plate online, they are having technical issues and should be fixed by this Thursday. Yon can go to your local vehicle registration office and fill out the paper version if you like.

Re: Specialty aviation license plate coming to Idaho

Back around 2003 and the 100 years of aviation hype, Ohio had a nice specialty plate:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/140674235483?ss ... 1555.l2649
they would say the extra money went to the road side rest areas to up grade the outhouse to nice restrooms. That has been done, now I don't know who is keeping the cash?
