Sportsman STOL install

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Sportsman STOL install

I've been looking into getting a Sportsman STOL kit for my 170. Does anyone know of a good shop that has experience installing these kits in CA or western NV?

I'll be real interested to follow along if you do get one. Pretty sure our rides are similarly-equipped.

Good Luck with it,

Re: Sportsman STOL install

BCP member 182STOL is an IA, and has installed this kit on his '56 182 and operates out of Boulder City NV. He could be willing to do an installation for you.

Also, Q Aeromotive in California City, CA is an aircraft sheet metal shop run by Alan Quackenbush, who is the son of Marshall Quackenbush, who was the holder of the Sportsman STOL STC. So Alan probably has a LOT of experience putting these kits on, and maybe a special tool or two?

Thanks for the leads EZFlap, I sent an email to Alan Quakenbush. I'll also see if 182STOL chimes in.

http://www.steneaviation.com/

They've installed a number of them so should have it down.

Or go to AK.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1tfjmTpU0g
It was more entertaining when he had "Workin in a Coal Mine" on the video, but I guess there were copyright laws.....

Yeah, but it is 4-5 hrs of beautiful flying. Think of all the strips you could hit!

Re: Sportsman STOL install

From Rio Vista Ca.to Polson Mt. is about 756 miles @ 120 mph in a C170 is about 6.3 hrs. Double that is 12.6 hrs burn 7.5 gph is 93 ga 100LL x say $5.50 is $511. Can you save that much in So. Cal? But it'd probably take 3-4 days install so motels and rental car?

Stene Aviation is the STC holder now. I'd go there in a heartbeat. Before you discount going there, give Will Stene a call and see what he has to say. You'll save shipping and they do these all the time.

And, there is some GORGEOUS country between you and Polson. I'd go that way in a heartbeat.

I have talked to Stene about the install on a 182B. He will let you help (lots of holes to drill) and there is a bunk house on the airport.

Hmmmm this option is looking a little better, I would have to wait a while to make that trip though.

I'm hear and headed for COOL climes this morning . Thinking Northern Nevada , Utah,Calif., Oregon ,or Idaho.Want some place 20-30 degrees cooler than Southern Nevada .This is my yearly "get out of here " trip to realign my senses . Think I'll pass on installing your Sportsman Stol kit . I'd suggest either go to Will Stene or have a local A&P do it. It will take a "newbie" 40 plus hours of drill, cut and rivet to get it right. Landing light lens (mine still isn't perfect) and Stol warning horn is difficult . Sportsman is excellent choice for Stol kit - I prefer it to all the others -and I've owned and flown them all . Taking my new Samsung everything phone instead of laptop. Instead carry my SPOT and Gps and camping gear.EZflap sent back my Helmet bag with all my maps and survival stuff .Thanks one more cup of coffee and oatmeal and I'm out of here . :)

Hey Bill. Stop by here on Saturday if in the area. Just irrigated strip and it will be dry enough by then. We have company but you can tent up by the hobby shop.

Re: Sportsman STOL install

Polson has a pretty nice setup for people/pilots to come and hang out. Many of our customers come from all over to have us do the install while they "check out the area". In fact we just finished up an airplane from Southern CA last week. Overall the airport has three courtesy cars that are open for use. There is also an apartment on the airport that they rent out for $50/night(check availability).

My favorite time of year is October. The crowds are gone, the temps are mild, and the tamaracks are turning color. It is absolutely beautiful to fly around NW MT that time of year...

If you have questions give us a call (800)597-1911.

Thanks for the information Will, I'm still not sure exactly what I'm going to to. It will probably be a few months from now though, I'm just trying to get everything figured out first.

I wont get into a bunch of pricing requests here but about how long of a install is the STOL on a Cessna in days? If a plane got there Friday morning when would/could it be done?

Re: Sportsman STOL install

Example, if an airplane rolls in first thing Monday morning we can have it wrapped up Wednesday evening so a person could be heading home Thursday morning. With that said our preference is to have it till Friday afternoon as we work through tasks that pull us away for short periods of time...

The Wednesday example is the best we can do otherwise we work on accommodating people's schedules as much as we can.

Will -

Are there any field approvals for 170A's that you are aware of?
