Re: Spring Utah Fly-in Pt 2 (New and improved dates May 7-9)

by the way guys,,,I don't know what weather is in store for southern Utah but it's severe clear and calm winds with temps in the high 60's here for today and all the rest of the weekend...figures... Only difference for me would have been a getaway day of today as opposed to yesterday which had 50MPH gusts in our mts. OH well, not in the cards.... 8)

Re: Spring Utah Fly-in Pt 2 (New and improved dates May 7-9)

Today three of us made the migration from southern Nevada up over Lake Powell hitting Nokai Dome, Dirty Devil, Happy Canyon, High Spur, Mineral Canyon, Caveman Ranch, and Mexican Mountain on our way to Heber. I got to admit I wasn't seeing the weather forecast as all that bad. We got the crap beat out of us. We did get the tour of Caveman Ranch which was pretty cool. Climbing over Price toward Heber I saw ground speeds drop below 50kts in my Husky. Good call on the weather. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.

Re: Spring Utah Fly-in Pt 2 (New and improved dates May 7-9)

Good call on postponing the fly in.
Flew down to gateway this morning. Saw a pilatus 12 land there that was cool. Talked to the pilot, they where heading down to caveman to do a photo shoot for the factory. I guess if they can get a 10000 lbs turboprop in there the rest of us won't have any trouble :D
But the air is just unstable and gusty today with scattered snow showers. Its looking like the weather will be great for next weekend. [-o<

Re: Spring Utah Fly-in Pt 2 (New and improved dates May 7-9)

Hey everyone,

I've got a tiedown question. What's the soil like there at Caveman? I've got some of those auger type tiedowns, but honestly, I've not had much luck with getting them in and just haven't gotten myself some good tiedowns purchased. Just wondering if there is a snowball's chance in hell in getting them in down there, or if I need to come up with plan B before next weekend.

Thanks,
Cory

Re: Spring Utah Fly-in Pt 2 (New and improved dates May 7-9)

cory, I used to own a set of those corkscrews but I never could find a wine bottle big enough to use them on... Neither could I get them in the ground no matter where I tried although I never did try them at the beach which is where I think they might work. I finally broke down and got a set of Fly ties.. using a pounder(Hammer) is much easier than holding a cork screw while you run around in a circle trying to get it to bite into the ground. besides Fly Ties hold the plane down waaaay better than those useless things which originally were sold at pet stores so you could tie your dog to them...also the fly ties fit into a little 12 inch bag which fits under my seat...

Cory,
I am glad you asked the question regarding tie downs. I was curious as to whether or not tie downs would be available. I have the Claw system but I have never used them. I have read that they do the job???

Ok Butch if you insist I will state the obvious.](*,) The guy builds a lavish hotel and restaurant along the Colorado river with an airfield to attract airplanes. Who knows he might have put in some tie downs?

Hey Gary,
I was just giving Butch a return ration for the mile high comment! 8) I didn't see any ties downs on any of the videos or photos but I thought I'd ask. I know one thing Caveman beats the shit out of that storage shed in JC. From my point of view I can get some use out of the Claw I bought for the trip last year  Looking forward to meeting up with you and again Thanks for managing the Fly-in.

Actually the ones I hace are the ones out of Sporty's. There aren't the dog tiedown ones, but I think are about as useless. They resemble the first 360 of an auger, but have the same problem: really hard to get them to bite the ground. If there are any rocks, etc., forget it. Sounds like I had better get something ordered and overnighted. Wish I would have asked this earlier. Oh well, I have been wanting to get some anyway.

Thanks for the info.

Re: Spring Utah Fly-in Pt 2 (New and improved dates May 7-9)

Well it looks like I'll be able to make it. Arriving Wednesday Morning and staying through Friday night or Saturday morning depending on work. I think we'll plan on camping Wed night at Mexican Mountain and then heading over to Caveman for Thursday and Friday.

Gary, I received the check in the mail, so I'll bring some cash for you and Rod and even up there. Forecast looks to be great and getting over the hump this week/end shouldn't be a problem. What time are you planning on arriving at Caveman Gary?

Cheers

Well, it's official...I can't go. I have to work and considering this is my last week of work until August I can't really complain about it....too much. Have fun everyone!

Yep, they made it over there. Adam took these photos yesterday....they made multiple takeoffs and landings for photos. Caveman in famous!!

Adam did say the runway is suitable for almost any airplane out there as his Cherokee 140 even made short work of Caveman.

Did you get a chance to look inside it, the avionics in it are something else. This good weather today is getting me fired up for caveman this weekend. :)
