Allen

You bring up a good point. #-o

Johnny is a good guy, will do anything to help. Likes beer. It would be a nice gesture if everyone would bring a little extra beer fot Johnny. =D>

He may be the happiest guy there. \:D/

Yeah, Johnny was the only one there when we went. Great guy, lots of interesting stories. He spends a lot of time there alone and I got the feeling he liked having people to talk to. He gave us the grand tour, probably lasted a couple of hours, then he gave us a watermelon he grew in the garden there. It was tasty!

Here are some more pictures of Caveman Ranch:

Image
You can most of the property here - the runway is right against the river, and the parking is about midfield.

Image
Here is a closer up view of the main area including the main lodge, the main house, the cave rooms, tennis courts, baseball diamond and plane parking area.

Image
Some of the rooms - they are renovating them and I don't know if any are finished yet. I suppose at least some are. There are 10 rooms.

Image
This is the main house. Notice the deck area up to the right. Great views!

Image
View off the deck of the main house.

Image
Panoramic off the deck looking south. You can see the main lodge, airplane parking and tennis courts.

Re: Spring Utah Fly-in Pt 2

What a great place to base out of.
I don't think we can wait that long for this Fly-in.
It's too cold in Mn. We're going Southwest earlier than this.
Good work planning the Flyin, It looks like a blast.
We hope to see some of you somewhere.
happy day

My Bearhawk and I will try and show up. I've been wanting to drag my MTB down to Mineral Canyon to do some warmer weather riding, maybe I can kill two birds.... Will confirm as it gets a bit closer.

Re: Spring Utah Fly-in Pt 2

My wife and I...

...will be volunteering at Natural Bridges National Monument in S/E Utah during the months of March and April. We will be driving out around Feb. 25th. The nearest town/airport is Blanding, Utah. I am considering flying the Maule out and leaving it at Blanding so we can join you and do some Utah backcountry flying while living out there. What do you think about leaving the Maule outside at Blanding during those months?

I don't want my wife to make the long drive from Missouri by herself. So I'd have to fly the Maule out and then get from Blanding to Salt Lake City to catch American Airlines home. Then drive out with my wife days later. Reverse the process when we come back to Missouri in May. Any thoughts on transportation between Blanding and Salt Lake? Probably about a 5 or 6 hour drive. Rental cars? Bus. limo or train? It is very isolated so I don't imagine that it would be easy to accomplish. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Bob

We were excited to heli in Silverton — until we saw the bird. Looking like something your stoner uncle built in the garage out of four Meccano sets, a fish tank, and an AMC Pacer, this helicopter seats a pilot plus two only, making it a tricky vehicle, logistics-wise, when your group has 8 people in it. Been looking at doing the same type thing. Wondering what strips have MTB trails in the vicinity?

Re: Spring Utah Fly-in Pt 2

Beware of combining fun, athletic activities with flying. Even though it seems like the best of worlds combining, it can throw a big wrench into the gears. I have a friend who brought his MTB to JC a few years back, and ended up breaking his collarbone on a trail ride. It made flying himself out a bit more challenging. Depending on the severity of your injury, it might be tough to fly yourself out, if not impossible in a taildragger.

It's my dream to combine flying with skiing, but the same sort of thing applies. Oh well, life is too short to have such concerns. Carry on.

Re: Spring Utah Fly-in Pt 2

Hey Gary,

Two questions: First, can we scan and email it to them?

And second, this is from there webiste:

Amenities

Air field- helipad- lodge.
Shooting range.
Cave lodging, or out door + RV.
Colorado River access (sand bar).
Working ranch with animals.
Base ball, basket ball, tennis court.
Gold sleuthing & panning hill.
Guided & unguided tours.

Children programs: Not available, no children under 12!

I was planning on coming with my family, which includes a 2.5 year old and a 5 month old. The next time you talk to the owner, would you find out if this is a problem?

Thanks,

Cory

Re: Spring Utah Fly-in Pt 2

Airport/helipad- yes
RV, don't know, don't matter :?
Ball field/BB ball yes, tennis, don't know if there is a good net.
Cave lodging is supposed to be in the process of being remodeled. Caves are there :D
River acces- yes
Panning hill, probably a hill, don't know what you'll find, dirt, scorpions, snakes, probably
Guided tours- Not yet
Working ranch? I'm sure there is plenty to do.
Animals? If you bring your kids, Us after Dark

Expect primitive accomodations. If it is better than that, be delighted.
This is a work in progress that has been going on and off for MAAANNNNYYY years.

It is an awesome spot, good guy, but it hasn't reached 5 star. Probably working on 2 star.

I will try and get progress reports as the date gets nearer, but you can see the problem in communication, and it costs me over $100.00 every time I need to go check on somethin.

HiC
Thanks, but it really doesn't take any effort, it is the only thing(pretty much :D ) that I enjoy doing anymore. Certainly what I enjoy the most.

This is such a great spot, and the country around it, it could easily be a trip of a lifetime for many.

Bring camera, chargers, batteries, film, whatever it takes. If you haven't been there before, you will probably be awestruck. Hopefuly. Atleast that's the way I feel. and I have been there alot, and it just keeps gettin better.

Gary I know what you mean. When I got there, Johnny kept asking me what I though of it...I don't think I ever gave him a true answer...I couldn't think of one. Unique was all I could come up with..never had seen anything like it. I look at my pictures and videos...still can't quite figure it out. I want to go back just to make sure it was real!
