SpringBreak/Aircamping Ideas

Looks like the opportunity has presented itself to go on a flying adventure. My wife and i are thinking go somewhere as warm as possible to do some swimming and camping.

I would love to do a trip into Mexico down the Baja and land close to the ocean and live it up but it seems a little dangerous and a pain in the butt.

We were thinking Lake Havasu AZ., then we could go see the Grand Canyon and check out Las Vegas which i have never been to.

There is an airstrip located on Pittsburg Point 1/2 mile from Lake Havasu City but the sectional says it's abandoned. i would love to camp there. its right on the water.

Anyone have any info. on that strip or any other spots on water to camp with water access. we will likely take our bikes.
Thanks for any ideas. Petar

Las Vegas over spring break... At the best of times LV is the equivalent of a hemorrhoid on steroids, and spring break would be absolutely unbearable. If you've never been (any time of year), count yourself lucky.

If you're looking for NICE, and warm, Death Valley might be a good option. There's camping at Stovepipe Wells, a luxury resort at Furnace Creek, and some of the neatest hotsprings you'll ever find at the Chicken Strip. Not much in the way of swimming, but lots of hiking in fantastic country, and great flying. The beautiful little towns of the Eastern Sierra's are just a ridgeline away, and it's some of the best country in the lower 48.

I don't remember the name...something like Organ Pipe...but there's a national park on the AZ/MX boarder with a couple little airports near by. Really neat country, easy camping, and warm. I've only driven through enroute to Mexico, but I liked the area.

It sounds like a few of the UT backcountry strips are open. If nothing else you can land in Moab and rent a car, then go to Arches and Canyonlands NP. Canyonlands has the best day hikes of anywhere I've ever been...truly excellent. They close the gates to the Moab airport at dark, and you can camp anywhere on the field. I wouldn't recommend the Moab airport as a camping destination, but it's nice to sleep there if you're coming/going.

Good luck...pm me if you want any more info on Death Valley or Canyonlands.

I was to Vegas once for the World of Concrete expo (it was twice as exciting as it sounds) for the first time a few years ago. I heard the stories and watched the movies, but I didn't really know what to expect. Considering my days were spent walking the show and my nights were spent hanging out with salesmen, I still think everyone should go to Vegas once for two main reasons...

1) It's a testament to what can be done with enough money. There's millions of square feet of air conditioned glass buildings and outdoor water fountains in the middle of the frickin desert!
2) It's in an interesting study of the human psyche. It's obvious that the whole thing is a machine designed to separate people from their money as efficiently as possible, but it doesn't matter. That next hand is surely going to be a big winner!

FYI - What goes on in Vegas DOES NOT stay in Vegas. It's blabbed all over the office the next week.

I am the text I create.

Well my wife had the idea of going to Supai just west of Grand Canyon National Park airport. Google Supai and GCNP, pretty cool but hard to get to.

There is an airstrip west of the Grand canyon national park airport, it is call The Ranch and i found it on the Topo maps of AZ but it is not on the Sectional. It is right on a 4x4 road that leads to the remote village of Supai. Does anyone know of this strip?????

I thought going to Grand Canyon Caverns airstrip would be cool too. Spoke with the lady today and she told me you can taxi from the airstrip to the front office and parking lot then go on the tour or camping. It is almost due south and not far from Supai village.

Sounds like you and I are planning the same trip. The Caverns airstrip was on my list of stops as well as some of the others around the Grand Canyon. When do you plan on going? I think I will be there this saturday or sunday. It might be nice to finally meet another BCP'er
