Greg was of course taking the picture, that's Bob and I. Something about the Witness Protection Program I think.

Bob get's extra points for landing the cross runway. It's a bit challenging cause it's short, about 725', has 100' trees you have to clear, and the end with the trees is a good 20'-30' lower then mid-runway. So once you've cleared the trees you can either land mid-runway which leaves you 430' of runway, or try and get down earlier and land on the uphill just prior to the 430' flat section. Pretty cool.

Phil, I'm jones'n to get back up there for sure and I'd love to visit...looks like a great spot you have there!

Next time you run into town, stop by the Forestry office in Soldotna if the helicopter is on the pad and ask to talk to the pilot. His name is Ken Carlton and he is quite an awesome dude...tell him I sent you. I was based there for the summer of 2009 and it was a great fire season. In fact, I bought my first airplane (C140) while I was there too...good times.

So, I'm walking down my runway a few minutes ago and a moose walks out. I freeze but too late it's seen me and heads back into the trees. But I notice something in the same area on the edge of my runway next to the trees. It's much bigger I think to my self. Have I seen this before? Don't recall any that big and brown along my runway. I decide to continue walking and investigate. I get about halfway and then realize I'm looking at a much bigger moose. I slowly start backing up, all the way back and duck behind the rudder of the SQ2. I wait and wait and wait and wait and the brown shape never moves. Was I mistaken?

Then she steps out into the open with her calf. Good thing I backed away. The other one I'd seen must have been her's from the previous year.

With an over abundance of caution this is as far as she came out.

Good for you. An over abundance of caution is a good plan on a human's part around mama moose. I once spent an hour on top of a VSM on the pipeline after I bumped into a momma who was not happy to see me.

People have a natural fear of brown bears, but a moose with calf is just as dangerous....
