Stanley in a Lance and Pirep??

Hey all, anybody know the latest conditions at Stanley Airstrip (2U7)? Is it dirt or grass or a little of both? Smooth, bumpy, rocky, etc?? I checked Shortfield.com, but there has not been any pirep's noted.

I have a friend flying up from SoCal and he wants to land his Piper Lance at Stanley. Any suggestions?

Thanks!!

Re: Stanley in a Lance and Pirep??

I was in and out of there a couple of times in July, mostly dirt and it was kind of like it was oiled. I know that sounds strange, but imagine it as hard packed smooth wet dirt. Not many rocks, plenty long with a slight side hill on the north end. There is a trail that leads down the hill to the grocery store and restaraunt.

I know this is a little old...landed there in Aug of '07..windy from the west...strip was oiled (?) about 3/4 of the way south to keep the dust down...surface was smooth but dusty. Flew over it in June of this year on our way from Smiley to JC..surface looked about the same.

Every time I have been into Stanley the north couple hundred feet have been sorta rough and rocky. Probly from prop blast blowing all the dirt away and leaving the rocks. Other than that it has always been in good shape.

Do any of you Idaho folks familiar with Stanley see any problem getting a stock Cessna 150 in and out of there?

I stopped in this summer, it's not oil. I'm guessing it is a dust suppression topical spray... likely a calcium chloride based product at least that's what we use around here for dust control.

In Idaho we just use oil...

During the cool part of the day no problem, just watch your weight.

Re: Stanley in a Lance and Pirep??

Thanks for the info. I used to drive to Stanley when I stayed in Boise for a couple of months on business. I fell in love with that part of the country.

Ever since I bought my airplane I've been wanting to fly back there. It's a pretty ambitious plan. It's over 1700 miles from my home airport, Pottstown Municipal (N47), and is just a bit higher than I'm used to.

The highest mountain in Pennsylvania, Mt. Davis, is only 3200 feet! So if I ever make it out there, I would have to be traveling light just to make it to my 12,000 foot service ceiling.

The coating is likely what the Canadians call "Chip Seal", or calcium chlorate.

Actually works really well to keep down dust, and bind the gravel together a bit.

Re: Stanley in a Lance and Pirep??

What I saw didn't really didn't look like 'chip-n-seal' as we call it here unless it was way old. Unfortunately, I can't imagine an oil application on dirt anymore unless Idaho missed the memo. Even here in an Oil State we can't do that anymore even though many a excellent "black top" road was made by applying tank bottoms (oil well sludge cut with a little diesel) to dirt roads... The only place around here that I know you can still do it is in Kansas but only on private lease roads. Used to be that we always used "prime" oil on road base (stabilized soil or aggregate base) before the first lift of asphalt and that has been banned in this EPA region for 10+ years... humm, a little oil to waterproof the base and get better adhesion or more pot holes and shorter life road asphalt what is worse.

I still think it was a chemical dust suppressant.

I used Calcium Chloride in liquid form (cheep) on a very large parking lot being constructed that couldn't be completed before a big event leaving 1500 cars to park on crushed limestone paving base (think really dusty & lots of slinging rock) for two weeks... the application worked wonders as it penetrated deep into the surface to bind the particles together. It also gave the surface a deep battleship gray color.
