Steelhead fishing near Portland

Anyone have information on steelhead outfitters near Portland?
We'll be in town for a few days and I want to take my Dad fishing.

We used to live in southern Oregon and my dad did a lot of fishing there.
It has been 30+ years since he has been steelhead fishing and we want to go.
Being limited on time and space we need a turn key outfitter.

Any suggestions?

Bill, I wish I could give you the name of an outfitter. My buddies and I usually just drive along the Sandy and look for riffles and holes.

Google "Sandy River Fishing" and you should get some results. You could also call Kaufman Streamborn, a local fly shop, and ask for recommendations on guides and outfitters.

You could also try this forum for a recommendation: http://www.oregonfishingforum.com/

I'm sure another Portland area person will chime in here too. Good luck.

Bill,

I have two suggestions for you, both are first rate. Travis from the Deschutes Angler and Tom Larimer of Larimer Outfitters guide for winter steelhead on the Sandy River at this time of year. Either one of them will take care of you and hopefully get you and your dad hooked up. Good Luck.

These guys are the real deal. I use to play baseball with one of the Son's.

They are about a mile from the headwaters to the Sandy River, and 15 miles or so from PDX. The Clackamas River also gets a good run on Steelies.

If you want a drive, head up the Columbia river to the Deschutes river headwaters. Steel head fishing does not get a whole lot better in Oregon than these three rivers.

Good luck!

Thank you guys for the info and links.
I talked to four guides and they are not real excited about the PNWs weather right now, for steelhead.
May forget the fishing on this trip.

Any Aviation museums besides McMinnville?
Which mico brews should be experienced in Portland? :D

Tillamook (tmk) in an old blimp hanger.
Hood River (4s2) both worth a stop.

Small world. Old man Stewart was my 7th grade science teacher back in 71. He would set in class tying flies while teaching. I think he open the fly fishing shop around 74.

You're in luck, because Portland is beer Mecca. My favorite brewpubs are Rogue Alehouse in the Pearl district, Widmer in close-in North Portland, Deschutes in the Pearl, any McMenamins', and many more. Those are just a few of the big ones in downtown. New Old Lompoc, Broadway Pub, McTarnahan's, Bridgeport, Amnesia, etc are all great. My new favorite joint is Paddy's Pub on SW 1st and Yamhill.

Have fun!

steelheading in Portland

Yeah, call Trevor, Reds Guide Service 503-307-5601, tell him Leland sent you. The rivers are going to be a little blown out for a while though.

A couple days ago you mighta had some pretty good luck fishing I-5 about 75 miles north of Portland. The tide went back out though.
After reading that extensive list of your favorite watering holes, Zane, I can maybe see why it is you're not getting much flying in!
