For those out there that have experience with straight tail 182's -- what's a realistic power setting/gph to fly along at 65% or so?
I am starting to consider some of the straight tail 182's out there. Even though I want a tailwheel - the 182 price/load/capability seems to be making the most sense for my mission of exploring Utah and being able to cross country. I had not looked at them because of the 470 and cost to operate, but now it seems running the numbers 90% of the time I can fly it like a smaller engined airplane.

Auto STC: Yes it's getting harder to find non-ethanol fuel -- is there anyone working on mods so they can handle a bit of ethanol?

There appears to be a nice one in Caldwell, ID I am checking out.

In researching I found a thread on here from 2008 where a Sarah was looking at a 182 for 25k and the surprise to the pricing... now it seems not so shocking. The start of the values declining.

Standard cruise in my old 1956 182 -0-470-R with - 203 prop is 2300 (digital tach) and 21 inches (digital MPG) is about 10-11 Gallon a hour .I use the lean till it sounds funny and turn (vanier) mixture back in turn and a half. Manifold pressure will vary with altitude . 21 inches is only below 8500 msl. Auto fuel is available but I think all in Kaliforinia has gas a hole added. Arizona has no gas a hole available in Kingman . I use a mix 30-50 % with 100LL .

I've got a really nice 58 182 I'll part with for the right amount Only problem is it needs engine work. The rest of the plane is in fairly mint condition.

I would entertain the idea of about half (49%) ownership, too.

There is a nice '59 in Idaho that my 2nd cousin owns:

Setup w/ fresh engine and ready for BC flying. you get cowl flaps with the '59.

Looks like a great plane...really trying to figure out how to get this one.

If it was only that easy. Breaking ground on a new house this month, for some reason the bank doesnt like the idea of getting a mortgage on a plane at the same time. Oh, and I would be the one flying it back.

Back to the original thread, it seems in my research the 182 can fly at 10gph and have the performance I need when needed..and carry the kitchen sink when needed. So I am letting go of the wheel being in the wrong place.

In todays world, I think it kind of hard to get a loan on a 50+ year old plane. I would not go in debt for a toy. Just me I guess.

Yeah, probably -- but I have been flying for 20 years and all of my expensive commercial training. It's time to have a plane. We have no debt other than house and can pay for it 4 years or less.. and living in Moab, UT there is actually some practicality of it all.

I can fix that for ya' a little later on, it can wait till whenever you can swing the additional coinage.

Until then, you will be flying, and flying an airplane that has incredible utility. Like many of us here, I have seen first hand what a straight tail 182 can do in skilled hands. You won't be giving up very much while you're waiting to have the nosewheel-ectomy.

If you have all the commercial training (one of them fancy epaulet shirt and tie kind of pilots), you can surely find some kind of professional or semi-professional use for the 182 - to either generate a little self-funding for the plane or at least write off some of your taxes. Give some instruction, tow a few banners or gliders, figure out a way to deliver hot chocolate to remote cabins, whatever. (Just stay away from the midnight artificial sweetener cargo runs)

Ask your accountant how many years you can write off the airplane expense before your Discount Mile High Club Air Taxi service has to show a profit, you might be surprised.

Section 179 will let you write off the whole shooting match the first year - but the hobby loss rule will limit you to a 0 loss with a carryover - still a good deal.
