Straight Tail 182 power settings

Anyone care to share their preferred MP/RPM settings in their straight tail 182's or 180's? I don't have the best manual to reference as of now! I was at 11,500' flying WOT and 2350 rpm leaned 50degree from rich for cruise.

Tips for managing the Conti 470?

Re: Straight Tail 182 power settings

my old 182 with the 470 worked best at 2100 rpm in cruise and leaned 25 deg rich...only 5 kts slower and a few gallons less p/h. the 470 motor is a good one. nice find on the 182, good lookin' bird, you will get some good utility from that. just returned at noon today from vegas, lake meade,st george, almost to moab...tons of rain in the am and evening hours, but our launches at 5-6 am allowed us safe passage. looks good for early am tomorrow as well. vegas is getting quite the flash floods goin' on while i was there working, but early am seems OK...

Which MP setting or WOT since at altitude?

Just found this viewtopic.php?f=14&t=2178&p=26470&hilit=180+rpm+settings#p26470

Well, seems a million opinions and no clear answer. Time to find a POH for a 59'

Yeah, your POH will answer most of your questions. Continental used to have an engine ops handbook for the O-470 series that was full of good to know stuff. I bet you can find 'em out there.

Re: Straight Tail 182 power settings

most of the time, to keep it cool, 21 sq was OK, and kept the temps in line keeping the cowlflaps closed...
rpm/mp match at 21...

Re: Straight Tail 182 power settings

I use 2300 rpm with 21 in MP for cruise up to 8500 Msl. Over 8500 all I can get mp---& 2350 . Fuel burn is about 10-11 gph --tune by ear not gauge ..

Re: Straight Tail 182 power settings

When I set up for cruise in my 59 C-182 at 11,500 I set at WOT which should give you between 19 and 20 MP and then adjust to 2150 RPM. Lean as required and manage your CHT to 380 or less. I suspect you should see about 10.5 GPH at those power settings and maybe a TAS of between 118 - 123 Knots.

BTW- When I watched your airplane on ebay I could not believe the price. I really wanted to buy it myself but could not come up w/ any justifiable reason to own two 1959 C-182's :D I suspect you got that plane for about $40k. Best deal I have seen in a long time.

Re: Straight Tail 182 power settings

In my '59 182 I would run 23" and 2300 rpm (low altitudes) and get 135 kts TAS burning 12.5-13 gph at 50* ROP. Up higher...WOT...less MP and less fuel burn.

Seems ~12gph. I need to be a bit more scientific.
