Strut Camera Mount

I've had a few requests to post pictures of the mount I'm using for my Drift HD170. It is made by a friend of mine, Bill Hemmel, in New Hampshire. I was "beta testing" it for him, and he let me keep it. I really like it. It's solidly made and where the clamp attaches to the strut it has a layer of shock-absorbing Sorbothane that helps keep the vibration to a minimum. Here are a few shots of the mount:

He has a website with more info, although I don't think it's 100% up yet. Here is the site: http://www.aerovideo.net/
I really like it, especially since if I mount it up on the strut like in the pictures above, I can keep the prop out of the video. I works with the GoPro cameras as well, that's actually what he designed it for.

Here is one of the videos I've shot with the mount - from another thread:

Re: Strut Camera Mount

Allen. That mount looks pretty nice. The only thing I would suggest is a secondary safety attachment for the camera. Wire and rubber loop around the camera or something

Maybe it's just me but I find it disturbing to have something as large as a camera with only one mount point.

Re: Strut Camera Mount

Thanks for posting it Allen. Is he selling them? For how much? I have an ATC camera, it would have to have a versatile attach point to accommodate different cameras. I like the design and need something like this.

Re: Strut Camera Mount

Sorry. I should have gone to the site first. Is the one you have the basic, $99 option with the 1/4-20 mount?

Re: Strut Camera Mount

That's the first mention I've heard of 'Sorbothane', since "That's Incredible!" screened a segment on it in the early 80's...

Nice looking bracket.

Re: Strut Camera Mount

Isn't the 182 strut a different size than the 150/170/172 struts?

Looks like a pretty slick solution.

Re: Strut Camera Mount

Couldn't find an email for him to ask about the possibility of a custom version for a Maule strut. Can you give me his email?

This works for a Maule Strut and it is cheap!
It is a simple rig that has two hose clamps of different size. So take your camera to Ace hardware for the fit. I use an Oregon Scientific ATC 3K, $140.00 because it is a tube cylinder configuration that holds snug with the hose clamp. The strut has a larger hose clamp with a strip of rubber to prevent slippage. It can be bigger then the strut and then cut the overage. Medium size worked well via eyeball measurement. They are so cheap I bought 2 different ones so I could save a trip. I tried the ATC 9K, shown in photo, $300.00 but it has a view screen and base that is square and weight distribution causes vibration hence a video vibrating.
If you buy the ATC 3K it comes with the rubber strip. It is straight forward with the ATC 3K as long as it is pointed in the right direction and turned on prior to TO  But I never made that mistake #-o
