Suggestions for camera

Looking for suggestions for a dual purpose camera. Goal is to have a camera that I can take good pictures with, that I can also mount on the dash to film while flying. I am not looking to post to youtube or anything like that, but I am starting to feel it's more for damage control. In light of Trent Palmers issue, and a near issue with me personally recently, I am thinking I need to start recording flights. Best case scenario is I will never need to prove anything, but I'd like to have documentation of the truth if it's ever needed. I am not a camera guy so I am digging into learning, but thought I'd check here for some good options.

Edit: The more I search, the more it seems like having a dedicated "go-pro" type camera for dash recording might be the way to go. I'm really trying to avoid that because I'd like this to be a dual purpose. Something I can take good pictures while on trips outside the plane as well.

Thanks!

Re: Suggestions for camera

If you just want a dashcam, there's lots of options for that specific mission. The point of those is to continually run capture CYA footage. Fiddling with a GoPro can be a PITA.

Re: Suggestions for camera

You'll want something that starts automatically recording when power is applied and has loop recording, saving the last 2-3 hours or so.

Like mentioned, there are lots of purpose built setups you can buy off the shelf for this.

The dual purpose may not happen easily.
