Re: Sun glasses

FYI, applying 'ant-glare' screen protectors to your electronic displays usually takes care of the polarized sunglass problem.

I have been using them for several years on my Nexus 7, without it polarized glasses turn the display black, with the anti-glare protector I have no problem seeing the display from any angle.

You can buy them and cut them to fit displays in the cockpit as well.

Re: Sun glasses

With my polarized Maui Jim's I have no problem read in my phone or my aera 500. But I do have to move my head a bit to read my radio and EGTs. Seems the angle I see it from the seat is tue perfect angle to blank it out.
The maui Jim's are great sunglasses and I highly recommend them.

Their patented tint is fantastic in low vis conditions, like smoke. Other manufacturers claim to have similar lenses, but there's no comparison.

They're not cheap, but worth every penny.

Had a pair of 58mm Serengeti's until stopping for fuel in PHX several years back. After lunch we came back to airplane to find them gone and replaced by some el cheapo .99 cent / some low life had them . Remembering that I really liked them - about 150 bucks . Now I just use the government issue Ray bans that I get from supply Sargent at supply. I'd like to get another pair of Serengeti's but oh well.

Re: Sun glasses

I am not a fan of polarized lenses when flying/driving. Not only do they blank out screens as discussed, I usually fly in pretty busy airspace and have had many times where the glint of another aircraft would have been filtered out. I also think it's something that you shouldn't be too cheap on, like a headset.

I like my Oakley fast jackets. I wear them driving, flying, fishing, shooting and mountain biking. They have interchangeable lenses so I bought a pair of polarized lenses to put in them for the fishing, their impact resistant which is good for shooting and mountain biking, and they don't fog up which is a problem I've had with other glasses.

Re: Sun glasses

I'm an Oakley fan too. My favorite is the Fives. The frames are pretty thin on the sides and fit nice under the headset. I preffer the Polarized. My favorite lenses are the VR28 Black Iridium. They have kind of a brownish/amber tint to them that make greens very green. I call them my happy glasses. They are especialy nice on a day that has any clouds or overcast.

Re: Sun glasses

I'll add another vote for Serengetti. Their tint does an amazing job of bring out details. Especially on snow and flat light days, and really helps me see through haze and smoke. Now I just need a new pair since I dropped mine on the hangar floor last year. #-o

Re: Sun glasses

I won a pair of Randolphs (some online survey) and liked them so much that I gave them to Deseret Industries (like a Good Will store) Hope someone enjoys them more than I did.

Re: Sun glasses (UpDate 9/4/14)

Update

There was and Ad in the EAA Mag from Dual Eye Wear for (Reddy reader) sunglasses for $99.00

Bought the AV2 with smoke lens (1.5, 2.0, 2.5)

Came today and they are great. Fit good, wrap around a little which is good. Lite weigh....look to be built well.

So Far So Good :D

Re: Sun glasses

I like cheap, and nothing beats tinted safety glasses. They are cheap ,durable, attenuate UV and can save your eyes if a turkey vulture come crashing thru the windscreen. You can keep ur Oakleys and other brand name china made crap. i'll put that money in the tank thanks.

Re: Sun glasses

Ha ha, I'm with you Sidewinder! I have, at any given moment, 8 or 10 pair floating around, I pay on average at most 20 bucks. I no longer sweat losing a pair, I just move on. I do make sure they offer the proper UV protection. After an adult lifetime of being forced to buy prescription sunglasses, after my eye surgery and no longer needing the scrip, it is a joy to buy cheap sunglasses, ZZ TOP had it right. It seems they are subject to a lot of abuse, getting lost mostly, I don't care anymore!

Re: Sun glasses

It seems as though every time I would buy expensive sunglasses, they would get lost somehow but not the cheap ones. I was in the dollar store for something about 5 years ago and bought some Foster Grants for $3. I'm still using them. For flying, I have some cheap yellow shooting glasses. They work fine.

Re: Sun glasses

Big fan of gatorz

I have their deltas with the green polar lens, works great and shows cloud edges well I haven’t had any issues with screens blacking out, gatorz also have a special tint for LCDs,

“ OPz - Optimized Polarized for full visibility of digital screens. Visible Light Transmission (VLT) - 10%”

nice also being made in the US and with the thin aluminum frames they fit helmets and headsets well

Been skydiving, flying, shooting, driving with them, happy customer
