What are the issues in using a piece of equipment that is or is not STC'ed in your aircraft? I really don't know the difference and would like to know. Would it possibly affect your insurance coverage on the aircraft if there was a claim?

I'm an A&P/IA and cannot figure out why I can clamp a GPS to my yoke (a flight control no less) without an STC, but to clamp a smoke colored piece of plastic to an airframe tube requires an STC.
I honestly think it has to do with whether it is considered a temporary thing. Don't use the word "alteration". I believe you could effectively argue it is temporary if it is mounted with thumb screws instead of screws that require a tool to install and remove.
Now this is opinion, not based on any FAR or anything, but if you can get a straight answer let me know.
It's a supplement to the type certificate, a special type certificate is different
