Scenario: Using the GARMIN PILOT APP, you plan a flight VFR with no flight plan and your buddy is tracking you with InReach for safety. The proposed route is: PHBK, Barking Sands -> PHLU, Kalaupapa:

Question: Will the GARMIN PILOT APP chart a de facto direct “Great Circle Route” to PHLU or is it really a “Rhumb Line” which is damn well good enough since GA has always used Mercator projection charts. Notes: latitude is close to the equator and the distance is relatively short.

Answer, choose as many as needed:

1) GARMIN PILOT APP will plot a “Rhumb Line” which is negligible due to the latitude and short distance.

2) Back end toggle must be on. Before any routine in GARMIN PILOT APP relating to “Great Circle Route”!

3) You must use “Great Circle Route” or Honolulu Center will route you Wheeler Army Airfield

4) All of the above.

I'm gonna guess #2 — must be set in configuration. But my Garmin Pilot subscription juste expired and I'm going to wait to renew it until I'm flying again so I can't check.

I made a mistake reading the heading, default heading is Magnetic Great Circle. The app doesn’t put an “M” next to the initial heading! That is kind of dangerous! Especially now everyone is using true and electronic charts.

Note: BRG = magnetic and BRG (T) = true
