Super AWOS

Check this out...it's a short list of airports that are enabled with these "Super AWOS" devices that report straight to the internet.

Here's a sample of the graphical display:

Pretty cool Zane!

I particularly like the runway with wind arrow and the pressure history.

After having spent years learning (finally) Metarspeak, I still like the text presentation:
http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/mesowest/getobext.php?wfo=boi&sid=boi

I can scan six hours of reports in just a few seconds for ceiling and viz, or winds, whatever. By just changing the last three letters in the URL to the indent of interest I can self brief over a wide area in a minute or so.

Presumably this can be done on the URL for SuperAWOS too. It may take a while for Super AWOS to catch on, but it's a nice graphic presentation.

...which is really its only advantage. AFAIK, 3S8 is still not a distinct airport station that you can get a METAR for from FAA or NOAA. Seems like KMFR (closest Class D) is always used.

These Super AWOS units are an actual hardware product, with this graphical display being one advantage.

The main problem I see with the website is the weather you see is always the weather at 5 minutes to the hour. Which is better than nothing but real time weather would be a lot better. I have about 7 or 8 of these bookmarked for airports in my state and the weather is always at 55 minutes past the hour.

Yeah, even though the AWOS reports every minute or so, the only way to get the absolute latest is to telephone it. Sometimes if it's human augmented I will see several reports in a short time if a significant weather event is happening....it's always worth checking the time stamp if it's important to a before takeoff decision. I have also been fooled more than once by day old data! :x
