Re: Super Cub vs Skiers on Swiss Glacier

I would imagine that someone is having some uncomfortable conversations with EASA representatives about now.

European countries require a "Mountain Rating" for landings at "altiports" and for high elevation landings on glaciers and elsewhere.
Here's an article with a description of the French version of the training required: https://www.flyingmag.com/bucket-list-alpine-altiports/

With two people in that Cub, they may have been training for the EASA Mountain Rating. Or, just hooting around. I've heard that Mt. Rosa is fairly popular for ski ops.

Not exactly on topic, but the skis on that Cub are Rosti Fernandez 8001 retractable wheel skis, which are simply the best skis ever built for that size airplane.

Looks like he was trying to work that first line, got to the end, didn’t like what he saw, tried to turn around, only physics said his only way out was now downhill through the line of tourists

Ooof

Personally I’d have stayed far away from the huge line of euro eco tourists (who you know are armed with tons of HD cameras) for a multitude of reasons

That's Pretty wild to watch. I'm thinking he meant to come back down the same tracks he landed on and lost situational awareness? By then it was to late? Never flown on skis but that doesn't appear to be how to do it.

Glad they weren't roped together for that section. Also glad he didn't trigger the slab above them. I can only imagine in that instant of decision-making that he thought he could pop off sooner and fly over them easily, but forgot to factor in the altitude.

I want to add a placard to my panel that says "don't go viral."

I have a sticker on the panel that says “Stay Off The Evening News”.

I also have those skis on my Husky and they do perform well.

I can’t figure if he just didn’t have the power and control authority to follow the same line used for landing or if taking off down that steeper slope was part of the ‘plan’.
