Superior Air Parts

I may be last to know, but I just looked at the new Sport Aviation magazine and saw an ad for Superior Aircraft engines. The engine build portion of their business is back up and running again. It had been shuttered since Superiors bankruptcy, caused by the failure of its parent company Thielert engines. Since that time Superior focused soley on it's core business of being one of the world's largest after market piston engine parts supplier for Lycoming and Continental engines.
Checking the web for further news I found the entire company was sold in August to a Chinese technology group in partnership with the Chinese government. The company will be called Superior Aviation. The Texas plant will continue to provide only US manufactured parts for the US market but a new plant will be built in Bejing to service the Asian market. Superior Air Parts has announced it is now poised to aggressively pursue new engine development which will also be based in the US at the Texas facility.

Superior Air Parts is the first company to have built and marketed an uncertified engine using 100% certified parts.

What's the latest, Dirtstrip? Are they back to business as usual?

Up and running but first things first. Engine parts is still the flagship and that is restarted and shipping. Engine building is next. Here is the update as of last month.

I too am interested in Superior's comeback as I also have one of their engines. Just ordered a set of blowproof exhaust gaskets. These folks have always treated me well when it comes to parts and information. HC

Re: Superior Air Parts

Good news, bad news--Superior's acquisition by the German company, Thielert, was very unfortunate, I was surprised to see Texans taken in-but fraud is fraud,we all get fooled, I've seen plenty of it after 30 yrs on Wall Street----"Thielert AG is a German financial holding company which has owned engine development and manufacturing companies. It is headquartered in Hamburg. Companies owned were Thielert Aircraft Engines GmbH with sites in Lichtenstein, Saxony and Altenburg, Thuringia and Superior Air Parts, Inc. in Dallas, Texas, USA. Thielert AG is quoted on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and was a member of the SDAX. The main operating unit, Thielert Aircraft Engines GmbH, declared insolvency on 24 April 2008. Since then the business of the engine manufacturer has been run by the insolvency administrator, Bruno M. Kübler, who has restructured the company and is now looking for a new investor.
Th key here is that it was a financial holding company when it bought Superior. So, they lied to Superior, bought the company, milked it of cash and nearly destroyed it--fortunately they were caught before the complete demise of Superior.
So, Superior, on its last financial legs, is approached by a Chinese ( gov't ) company--( notice how many GA companies the Chinese are buying--Cirrus!)--they offer a recapitalization and the ability to continue their US biz, and will set up mfg'ng in China--they lost some quality employees, but maintained their technology and IP--I'm not going to get into China, the bubble , etc--that's for later--but for now, Superior manufactures "superior" products, has serviced all it's past commitments--and has a bright future--
The Bad--Superior never made the camshafts--and the company that did ( in biz since the 40's) has folded under the current Administrations reg's and tax and health care burdens--so, I don't know where the current camshafts are being manufactured--happy mine are of the original company--
P.S. :I am not China phobic, not in the least--all this current MSM BS about China displacing the US is the same as the early 80's when Japan was suppose to do the same thing--I do qualify this with the possibility that the US could have very serious problems, if there isn't a significant change in DC-- but back to engines--Superior--excellent--

Re: Superior Air Parts

There is another US company, and their name escapes me at the moment, that do non-certified Lycomings. They paint the cases yellow, some red, and will let you come to their shop and assist on the assembly. I want to say their IO-360 is called the Extreem or something like that. Ring any bells?

Superior Air Parts had a customer build program also. The one you are thinking of did not escape you.
