To keep stall speeds and takeoff and landing distances low (1,452 feet and 890 feet, respectively)

Wow impressive...... or not

Re: Sweet new Backcountry aircraft!

NOT!!! My opinion only but I wouldn't catagorize that as a STOL aircraft. Heck I can do better than that in my lowly 'ol 172 powered by a MIGHTY Cont. O-300! LOL

The notion that one could put bigger tires (8.00x6?) on a Diamond (motorized glider) and call it a Tundra is one of the most hilarious things I've ever heard. That's priceless!

Re: Sweet new Backcountry aircraft!

1450' take off and 890' landing is....well.....uhmmm......great for a plane of that type...but STOL? I don't think so. But the mention of a 75hp rotary engine? THAT is interesting, at least to me.

There is a fella out of Reid Hillview airport in southern San Jose Calif. that gets better performance out of an old Cherokee 235 for a WHOLE lot less $$$$,$$$,$$

They were using Cherokee 235s and Cherokee sixes to haul fish out around Dillingham way back in the 80s. Got pictures buried somewhere. Way back somewhere.

Servant Air and Tanana (among others) are still using and making $$$ up there with Cherokee Sixes. Very capable airplanes.

Lets see....$318,000.00 for one....I DON'T THINK SO..!!!!!

You can get 2 or 3 nice CC cub's at that price.....and they will out-perform that little POS any day.. :D

I believe to be a STOL aircraft you have to land and takeoff in 100 yards,300 feet 800 feet just dont cut it.

Careful now, qualify that with Diamond Tundra. Don't want to offend the owners of the real thing, although I see in Russia this has been tested to with stand holes ruts and irregularities on landing for 10 whole feet!

After a 2 year hiatus during which I went on to fly real airplanes (Cessna 206, 180) I'm back flying the ol Tin Indians at Tanana Air. I flew 606 through the 20,000 hour mark back in 2007 or 2008. It's got a little over 20.6K hours on it now, 2K are mine, it's a sturdy bird, hauls a load, even saved my life once or twice. Takes off short with me and gas fumes, but sure isn't a bush plane. It's been listed for sale at $20 grand for a long time. Not one phone call. Gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside that nobody else wants to fly it even if it's given away. Tanana has a 207 and 185 now so those are my preferred steeds...

Re: Sweet new Backcountry aircraft!

The two important bits from the article are that there are 16,000 grass airstrips in Russia and that the 280 hp Austro should be available in the near future.

Re: Sweet new Backcountry aircraft!

I wonder what is taking off and landing at those 16,000 so-called back country airstrips now?....Why do they believe they need a $300,000 tri-gear, low wing plane to do what a $70,000 high wing, taildragger can do better? I mean no offense to any low wing, tri-gear owners or pilots, but it just seems to be kinda backward marketing since this Diamond aircraft doesn't really have STOL performance.,
