Switcheon RF issues?

Has anyone else had reliability issues with their Switcheon? Mine always had a weak/flaky cellular connection (the cell service is weak at the airport, so this is not the fault of Switcheon), I added an antenna so I can reach it more reliably, but I can't ever use the scheduler on it because the box itself is resetting once an hour or so due to "RF interference" according to Switcheon tech support.

It's not near anything in my hangar that is putting off RF, but I can't be certain what's going on in nearby hangars.

Has anyone else had this issue and found a fix? Or perhaps is there another product that is less suceptible to this issue?

Re: Switcheon RF issues?

Friend, who is on this site, solved the problems he had with his via using a hammer! I was in the process of getting one and after reading reviews and talking to him, I declined getting one. Was told the customer service was terrible and was never able to get it to work correctly. I know this doesn't answer your concerns, but there are several disgruntled owners. Maybe in larger cities where cell reception is better the unit works flawlessly.

Hmm, that's really interesting. Their customer service response was pretty prompt, I think they even emailed me back on a saturday. That said, they went quiet after I asked how far the box needed to be from other equipment to eliminate the "RF interference."

I'm considering just getting a starlink and setting up a small network at the hangar with IOT devices rather than cellular stuff.

Re: Switcheon RF issues?

I’ve had trouble with the “scheduler” too but have had no problems manually turning it on from home. The app could be better. I can’t get an adequate cell signal in the hangar with the door closed so also installed the exterior antenna. I do get spurious texts that the unit is disconnected/connected. It might be a roaming issue. I’m near the Quebec border and my phone sometimes grabs a Canadian signal because it’s stronger. Perhaps the Switcheon isn’t allowed to roam.
The Battery Minder is the only thing powered when I’m not at the hangar so, with the external antenna, I don’t know what an RF source would be.
Despite the mediocre app, I like the product. It’s a decent value for me.

Re: Switcheon RF issues?

Did Customer Service identify the frequency range that’s causing the problem? It would be ironic if it was being caused by the AWOS transmission or by other com or nav frequencies.

Rereading my post, sort of sounds gloom and doom like, Apologies for that. Sounded worse that it probably is. As you mentioned, I'm guessing the metal hangar probably have a lot to do with bad reception. The guys that were using them around here stated an external antenna was tried but wasn't much improvement. I felt I could just plug in the heater the night before, or for the plane in town, go in early. I just plug it in and then go take care of other business in town which generally ends up being long enough to get the engine warm in the temperatures that I fly in these days. I don't deal with flying in below zero temps these days. I still like the idea of the Switch-on, but until I hear rave reviews, I'll continue allowing a couple hours to preflight and warm things up.

If you get things working well, please keep us posted as I am still interested.
