SZN - Santa Cruz Island, California

Does anyone have any information on the Santa Cruz Island airstrips in California? There are two airstrips listed, and maybe a third on the south end of the island? Has anyone camped out there?

Restricted. Owned primarily by the Nature Conservancy, a portion of the island is federal. I went and looked at Airnav to see if anything had changed recently, but it appears it is only more restrictive.

Pretty sure the only one of the Channel Islands open to public aviation is Catalina (KAVX), which is a ridgetop field and has confiscatory landing fees.

Re: SZN - Santa Cruz Island, California

I inquired about a year ago to camp on SZN, and unfortunately the island is closed to our planes. The only authorized 'concessionaire' is Channel Islands Aviation from Camarillo. They will take you out and pick you up if you really want to camp on the island. But be sure you have your camping permit, otherwise you will be turned away.

I hear there are only two park rangers assigned to the island chain so the probability of the rangers catching you is small. But I bet CIA would make a big fuss. CIA is going out to the island a lot this time of the year. I live near their flight path and see CIA equipment quite often.
