I do not believe we have ever met, but we have a few mutual friends in the warbird world...Frank Kimmel, Chip Woods, David Peeler, Jeff Linebaugh, Larry Lumpkin, Dave Folks... I have heard much about you...all good...mostly :D

I try to get down to Greenwood now and again to play with Frank and his toys. We have been friends for years and he is to blame for my warbird addiction.

Which one of his airknockers? I have trouble keeping up with what is in his stable from one visit to the next. :D I assume you know "Frostbite" is returning to Jack? Bummer too, I really enjoyed flying that one. I don't think it will take him long to replace her. I try to make it down as often as my schedule allows and kick back with the low-lifes...heck I-R-1 myself. Many years ago when his Supercub wore the white clothes, Frank lent it too me and said "get your tailwheel rating and you will never look back...it opens the door to a lot of fun aircraft". I took his advice (and his Supercub) and flew the dog out of it for nearly 8 months...till it was time for the annual and recover. Two years ago Frank began teaching me to fly the Texan leading up to my solo flight with him off my wing in the Corsair...this is where the article "Taming the Texan" came from.

I primarily fly a Stearman but always look forward to the next chance at taming the texan. My T-6 time is interesting in that I have only flown racers, and the two racers that I have flown have been Race 47 "Frostbite" and Race 22 "Two of Hearts"...(arguably) two of the fastest T-6s around the pylons and arch rivals of each other. Don't tell tell Frank or Chip that I included the "arguably" caveat or they may not let me fly their toys anymore :wink:

Come on up this way on October 15th and join us for the Mid Tenn Fly In at M33. It is a warbird fly in that we have done for the last 3 years...no schedule or waivered airspace...just free BBQ, good friends, and lots of flying to round out the summer months. We open it to the public to come out and see the aircraft, but there is no admission fee or profit to be made...it's all for fun and we try to keep it in the style of the old country fly-ins from the past.

His L16...I did have his super cub for a while (I borrowed it while deciding if I wanted to get one), had it also for a while in the past when I was teaching my son to fly. I had my son ready to solo in the Six, but the ins co wouldn't cover him. Frank loaned me his Super Cub, I soloed my son, he did some of his cross countries in it, had a great time.

Nice picture of the Six. Frostbite was a good Six (not as good as catch 22, of course). I flew it some while he had it.


If I'm off that weekend, I'll be sure to come up.

I don't know if Don and I are talking of the same one, but the Olympic Flight Museum has a very nice SNJ-4 for sale. On top of that, one of the best T-6/warbird instructors I've ever flown with is local. Carter Teeters is a CAF check T-6 pilot, flies their F8F Bearcat, FM2 Wildcat, AN-2, and also flies for Paul Allen's (Microsoft) Museum in his P-47, P-51, Hurricane, Spitfire, Polikarpov I-16, and lastly the Heritage Flight Foundation's F7F-Tigercat, P-51B, and F8F. To say he knows warbirds is an understatement. However, a calmer, more un-assuming pilot you'll never find.

Also, if you're in AK part of the year, the CAF in Anchorage has a Harvard (T-6) that Carter ferried up there a couple of years ago and checked all the members out in it. If you wanted to just get used to the airplane, a membership fee, $3,500 and the cost of a checkout, and an hourly charge would get you in the plane pretty cheap. I'd fly a hundred hours in that, then start looking for your own. Carter is also a FAST check pilot in the T-6, he and I have spent several weekends with relatively new T-6 and T-28 owners working on formation fundamantels.

Once you're comfortable in the 6', and ready to start learning some race skills, then you could go get some instruction from the guys in Auburn, and attend PRS. As was stated before, when you show up at PRS, handling the T-6 in unusual attitudes, in formation, and low are already assumed. They're just there to teach you the race aspect.

If you should eventually make it to Olympia to look at the SNJ, I can introduce you to Carter and you can stay here at our little farm which is 15 minutes from the Olympia airport. Just PM me, or get my contact info from Don if you decide to make it up this way.

You can go to Kissimee, and get good training, but you will you pay through the nose. There are other, less advertised instructors around, especially on the west coast that can provide more tailored instruction.

Scary isn't it...

Honestly I just threw that one out there. I had seen that web link back when Nazzi took his last dance with Su Su. I asked Frank about its validity and he told me that you were still around and causing trouble in the Delta so I said Machiavelli would make a good callsign for you. It was an offhand comment during the conversation and I had forgotten about it until that post was made on here so I thought I would dig up an old joke.

Oh, but I did know about Su Su so I guess it's still scary. :wink:

Actually, it's sort of an answer....


My nickname of late has been "the EFI" (for evil flight instructor)...somehow Machiavelli is even better...you have to have some awareness to make the connection....

I wish that were the case. With 3 youngsters running around the house my hands are anything but full of time.

Warbirds are one of those things that I really enjoy being a part of so when a pilot, plane, event, etc comes up in conversation or I read about it the information tends to stick in my head. Somewhere along the way you came up in a conversation(s) Frank and I were having and the information just stuck there. It can be both a blessing and a curse.

Now that we have unofficially met, we will have to do so in person sometime. First round is on me. Image

Lookup Dan Vance in Sonoma (KSTS).

They can do a T-6 Checkout - and also P-51 checkout. $3500/hr but a 3 hour minimum for the TF-51.

I fly a T-6 out of Hollister - waiting for my P-51 checkout as soon as we get the engine back together.

Thumbs up on Dan Vance. One of the guys I trained in a T6 later got a Mustang, I had done some prep work with him in the Six, he went to Dan Vance, got a good Mustang checkout.

Well having my plane in the shop sure does cost a lot of money!

Today I started flying gliders. Did 5 flights over Tahoe. All of them where about 20-25 minutes. What cool plane! High tows, low tows, boxing the tow plane, stalls, 200' emergency procedures, I am tweaking again. Doing it all over in the am...

FWIW There is a nice T-6 in Medford OR for sale, fire sale price due to economy. A friend who is very knowledgeable in warbirds went to look at something else there, saw it, and said it is a creampuff.
