TADA Finaly a tire to wheel adhesive, Pliobond

Well, I been readin and askin folks questions about what might be the best product to reduce the potenshal of the tire slipping on the wheel, and I tink/hope I have found it.
Was talking to a buddy today, and this is what he uses, and has tested it, and is satisfied. Reading about it, sounds good, so I'll give it a shot. Thought others might be interested. Can be bought off ebay, among other places.

That's the same stuff that the engine shop in Omaha said to use when putting in a new crankshaft oil seal on the O 470.

I am willing to ask the obvious question......

How hard is it to take the tire OFF the rim when you need to?........ :?:

Ya you might have to bring a tire shop with you to break it off the bead!

Re: TADA Finaly a tire to wheel adhesive, Pliobond

Ye, I have thought of that too. short answer, I don't know, cross that bridge when we get there. If I had the money, I'd get the Bushwheels. Everything beyond that is some sort of compromise, and I am just trying to make the best of the compromises. How big a problem is it if you shear a valve stem?

This activity has all kinds of potential risks, just trying to minimize them. There is always a what if....

The adhesive will be so thin, (but adding shear strength to keep the tire from slipping)that I am hoping you can get it lose at a point, then just work my way around. Maybe it would be a good idea to not put any adhesive at one point, say by the valve stem, just so I had a point of begining for breaking the bead.

James was runnin 8lbs. when his sheared, and his plane is lighter than mine. I have been runnin 12, dropped it to 10 last week. Probably put the adhesive on and go to 8 just to see how it acts. I suspect that I will end back up at 10, and with the adhesive, hopefully good to go.

I guess, worse case scenario, might have to add some genle heat(That will usually release an adhesive, particularly one that remains pliable), but, hopefully it wont be that bad.

I've heard  of motorcycle road race teams use a wing walk type of product around the bead of the rear wheels. Supposedly it works awesome.

MEK is the solvent for Pliobond.
Just last night I used pliobond to glue in a crankshaft oil seal. Clean every surface with MEK several times before applying.

When I mounted my GY 26s I used some contact adhesive. Has worked good so far. Also I placed a white alignment line on tire and rim to visually check any changes.

I run 8 PSI in my tires. Plane grosses at 1800lbs.

Re: TADA Finaly a tire to wheel adhesive, Pliobond

Coyote & Shorty, what size tires you guys running-- 26" GY's, 850's, or ?
I run 850's on my C150/150TD-- generally start them off at about 12 psi, then top 'em off when they start looking low. My gauge doesn't read below 10, so don't know just how low they get, but after I top them off I notice it's much easier to pull the airplane into the hangar. I've never noticed all that much difference in landing, but then again I'm usually on pretty smooth surfaces-- big rocks or similar might be a different story.

Just a fallow up to see if you guys are still happy with Pliobond and how low of tire pressure you have gone and still have pliobond hold.

THANKS

Re: TADA Finaly a tire to wheel adhesive, Pliobond

I just used counter top contact adhesive and have had no problems. Paint a line to check for slippage. I have had pressures as low as 6Lbs. and no worries.

Re: TADA Finaly a tire to wheel adhesive, Pliobond

Long time ago we used to drill four small holes around the rim and put short sheet metal screws into the bead. Some tapped the holes so they could loctite Allen Head machine thread screws in place.

Re: TADA Finaly a tire to wheel adhesive, Pliobond

Before I committed to putting the pliabond on my rims I tried several different samples of different adhesives, and ended up going with elephant snot(3M weatherstrip adhesive). Although I haven't been flyin as much as I would like, I haven't had any slippage of the tire on the rim, When I put it on, I divided the circumfrence of the wheel in thirds and put down 3 evenly spaced strips of adhesive, about 6-8" long, giving me some areas of no adhesive, hopefully making it easier to get the bead loose when the time comes.
