Kelly:
Just after you pass the Nebraska line, there is a huge lake with beaches that rival the ocean. The name of the lake is Lake McConaughy (referred to by the locals as Lake You Wana Lay). It is about 30 miles north of Ogallala (near the Colorado / Wyoming border). It used to be a dirt strip right on the beach next to a great camping spot. I haven't been there in a long time, but it used to be a great spot
Although it would take you a little south, my favorite strip in Colorado is the Marble Canyon strip just out of Glenwood Springs. It is a beautiful grass strip at about 8,000 ft next to the Crystal river. It is private, but if you call ahead and get permission and sign a release, the owner is usually very generous about letting others use it. You can find out more about it on the Colorado Pilots Association. Look up events and there is usually a flyin in Sept that has info and the release form. If you decide to go there, look up the info on the CPA website. It is not a difficult strip if you are prepared.
Enjoy Oshkosh. It really is quite a sight.
