Tahoe trip

The family is up at South Lake Tahoe for my grandparents 60th anniversary, so after work Sunday I jumped in the cub and headed north. Didnt get to leave til after 1pm and I was leery about flying in the Sierras on an August afternoon, but the weather reports showed just about ideal conditions for summer mountain flying...so I departed.

A nice slow cruise climb to 10,500 ft yielded nothing but smooth air and a nice tailwind across the valley. Once above the haze layer, I noticed a few puffy's to the east of my route and wondered if my luck would continue. The smooth ride persisted until just before the descent into south lake, just a small amount of turbulence kicked up, if nothing else to remind me that I was in fact, in the mountains

After a nice dinner with the fam, and a shitty nights sleep on a hide-a-bed that more closely resembled a padded bowl, I decided to get going about 10 this morning to take advantage of the cool morning air. After BS'ing with a couple line guys about the local area, they told me about a strip to the west, but weren't sure about its condition. Since I wasn't in a real hurry, i told them I'd check it out and report back. It was a privately owned strip just south of Loon lake. Since I didn't get any coords, only a general description of the location, it took me a bit to find it. One of the guys mentioned it had a couple small saplings growing on it...turns out, though, they weren't very small #-o Unfortunately this strip was unlandable

Following that little tangent, I headed for home, landing in Los Banos to bs with a buddy and get a little birdseed to get me home.

Perfect day on the lake

Since I wasn't topping off, I told him to just use the previously installed step ladders

Doesn't get much more blue than this...

Some glacier carved rock...managed to avoid the temptation to do some water skiing

The aforementioned "loon strip" looking south-ish

Looking north, you can see the "saplings" peppering the strip. Once I saw it was a no-go, I didn't bother to get any closer. It looks as if this strip has been unused for a number of years...too bad, cuz it would be a great place to camp, with reasonable hiking access to the lake...

Overall a great trip, wish I could've stayed a few days...stupid work...

Re: Tahoe trip

That's the Van Brocklin strip. Only about 200' useable at best. I have made more approaches into that place than one could express. Just spoke to one of our own here about this very place. Forgetting his name. He runs the kern airport??? Works with the RAF... It would be a great spot to have open.

Loon is one of our ski ponds in the winter. Wish I had known you were u Bart. I'm on the other side of the lake. Drop a line next time.

Re: Tahoe trip

I thought it was Van Vleck? Either way i wish it was still open. Check out this site for some more info... 4th strip down http://www.mountainflying.com/Pages/air ... junk7.html I tried to find this airstrip one time after a camping trip to Loon Lake but couldn't locate it from the ground.

And you are thinking of Rich Lach (pacerpilot), Kevin.

Had I been able to stay any longer I would have contacted you for sure! I might have some time off next week, if we get the same weather next week I'll try to head up there and play, might have some time off.

That's what the local guys called it. Apparently it's the same Van Vleck that has a strip in the Sac area? I've seen it on the sectional somewhere..

Re: Tahoe trip

This place shows it as CA50: http://airportnavfinder.com/airport/CA50/

But CA50 now looks like it's Hughes/Malibu Heliport according to Airnav.

Re: Tahoe trip

The heliport is about 5 miles SW of the strip up on a hilltop.

Pacerpilot is looking into this.

Re: Tahoe trip

Yep same as the Van Vleck airstrip in the Sac Valley. Mr. Van Vleck died at 79 in a helicopter crash. That was back in I think 2000. It's sad to see that strip decay. If only we knew someone. I would throw money in to fix this trip up and make it a recreation airstrip for Cali. I think it would be extremely popular since california only has 1 real camping airstrip that is not a hard surface - Gravely Valley.

Re: Tahoe trip

Re: Tahoe trip

I'll have a few weeks after the 20th with little to do.
I'll grab some gear and drive in to check it out, pace it off, etc.
Does look like a great spot.
