Re: Tail Heights

Tail hieght on a sqaure tail 172, with-out a strobe in the tail cap, and with 2 1/5 inches of exposed strut on the nose is 9'. with a strobe in the tail cap and a flat strut it can be over 10'.

Re: Tail Heights

Yea, ours is a 1969, so its the newer slanted tail

Trying to figure out, we want to put anfibs on sometime in the future, but we are looking at a t hangar and the door is right around 11ft, maybe a little under. Wip's website shows 11 ft for there floats

Re: Tail Heights

Cessna_Pilot,
You did not say if you are buying or renting the hanger, but if you are buying and the hanger currently has a bi-fold door, an option would be to install a Hydroswing type of door, which would give a lot more clearance.

Re: Tail Heights

Does your 172 have a float kit?

Seems like your going to be into a lot of money with upgrades and loosing a lot of useful load. The price of floats, the kit and the labor, it may make more sense to think of selling and getting a different airplane. Not that the 172 isnt a good airplane on floats. Its actually great, but amphibs...Makes me wonder...Purely my opinion...

If it looks smooth, it might be. If it looks rough, it is...www.bigtirepilot.com ...www.alaskaheliski.com

Re: Tail Heights

You can also add a Hi-fold kit to some Bifold doors which enables the door to go up a foot or so more.

Re: Tail Heights

Cessna_Pilot,

I am building a new floatplane hanger this summer and just ordered a Hydroswing door the other day. The building is going to be fairly high anyway, since I am using a rail system to get the plane inside, so I opted to go with the hydraulic door to utilize building height. Here is their website http://www.hydroswing.com/ they deliver about anywhere. These doors have become very popular in the last few years (especially for farm shops) because of head clearance and that they lift hydraulically, rather than using cables or straps. Steve
