taking backcountry adventure to new heights

After seeing Shortfielder's gallery, I've just gotta say this is this the greatest flying forum around! I felt that way from the beginning, but can it get any better than this? You guys (especially you gals) have outdone yourselves!

Amen CAVU. I can't wait for spring and summer, although today in Portland is surprisingly nice :D We'll have to start planning the next BCP fly-in. I think we should have more than just the annual summit at Johnson Creek this year.

That place with the brewery sounded pretty good. And there were some places with hot springs, they are always fun. But I guess it's all good if you are with the right bunch, and we got that. Happy New Year. Gary

That having been said,
I understand that the "BCP" crowd is a step above and willing to make a trek. At least that's what I understand you guys are capable of...
My wife just finished and bottled a large batch of wine. A delictable Shiarz. If you guys have the mettle to make it up here, you won't be disapointed... This is the epitomy of a flying man's country and hospitality. Plenty of reasons for road trip foder.
AND a standing invitation from the Mackenzie's.

I'll be up there the first part of May. I have a friend in Palmer that I'm coming up to see and help celebrate his 50th birthday. I go up every year and go snowmobiling with his family. They have a cabin up in Petersville. I am also planning on going to the backcountry pilots convention in Anchorage. So hopefully I will get to meet you and sample some of that fine wine. The bummer is I won't be bringing my plane, but coming commercially. Happy Holidays Gary

JCR is hard to beat for gatherings. It would be nice to find someplace like it, but warm enough for a winter/spring gathering. Columbia would be a nice place to meet. Nice grass runway, showers, good camping and supplies in town. I can't think of any other place that has those amenities that would work during winter months, but I haven't been everywhere either. Open to suggestions . . .

Hey Jr. Sounds good. Maybe the people from each state could get together and pick out their favorite spot or spots and enlighten the rest of us tosome of their local treats. A different state every month. That would be pretty ccol, Happy holidays Gary

I'm not much at putting together social shin digs.... but for those of you in colder climates that are jonesing for a fun place to fly I could suggest this spot.... It's smooth and long enough to be nose dragger friendly but in close proximity to plenty of fun spots that are not. The river has smallmouth and catfish. There is a firepit, horseshoes, a picnic bench and room for about 8 or so planes. As a bonus if the "other half" needs to be close to civilization there is a major metropolis (Phoenix) twenty cub minutes away.

Give us a buzz if you come down this way, Rob

AK Guys; I'm in for the Trade show!
Rob, If Phoenix is twenty Cub minutes away, that's what, 5-6 miles?!

I think there's more of us than we think up this way.

I'm also thinking that in the next month or so we should have an ice fishing day/trip or two then there's Irondog & Iditarod. Oh yeah, after break up there's the Valdez fly-in and the Kings will start running in late May, Silvers in June. Spring Bear & Caribou then Sheep Mid August and right into Moose season....
My calendar is getting a little loaded, WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING AT THIS DESK!

Guys, just let me know and I'll post anything you want in the Events section on the homepage, as long as you have concrete dates.

I may even rig it up so that you add an Announcement in the Events and Flyins and it automatically shows up on the homepage. It might make it easier for our lurker friends to find out.

Valdez

Hey all AK backcountry flyers,

The trade show is a good time --lots of products and what not, but when it comes to AK general aviation, Valdez is the must attend event. It is all about general aviation. Small planes and flying them take center stage --not to mention burgers, brew, and camping under the wing.

I hope to meet some of you there.

The Valedz Fly-In is May 11 to May 13, 2007. They are just putting together all the pieces, but rumor has it they will be giving away a set of 31" Bushwheels for the bush class STOL event and a set of 35" Bushwheels for an all new experimental bush class. These are just rumors. In any case this event is a growing concern, attracts some good pilots, and would be agreat way to begin an Alaskan summer flying adventure. Come on north.

I was a little dissapointed in the categories. I will have to play in the Bush class instead of Light Touring because I'm 2300# gross. I don't stack up too well with a 1030# cub, but what the hell, it's flyin' right? My measure to beat is Chet's 110' landing. Time to strip some weight from the Peril!
