Tapanee Pegazair

Found this interesting looking kitplane in the Kitplane magazine buyer's guide. Anyone fondled/flown/owned one? Looks like rag and tube with a metal wing.

Zane
I found this information on one of the planes in the pictures you posted.
You will have to use Snail Mail or call the guy. Usually guys that own planes like to talk about them. This guy is probably like the rest of us.
I don't know this guy. I only looked up the information

Re: Tapanee Pegazair

The Pegazair has a retractable slotted wing, opened at high angle of attack and closed in cruise. The elevator and rudder on the early ones at least were a copy of the 701 with its under cambered elevator to pull the tail down on take off. I had considered a set of pegastol wings when I had the 701. They were faster in cruise than the fixed slot. The the deal breaker was the asking price of the used wings alone were more than I gave for my whole 701.

Re: Tapanee Pegazair

Zane,
I think there was a recent short discussion on a Pegazair on the SC site. If I remember correctly it is a very good performer but has an O-320 or O-360....can't remember. Very short TO and Landing from what I remember. The discussion was fairly recently.

Tapanee Pegazair

WW,

From the website, it looks like there is a big brother model called the Levitation that is spec'd for 150-180hp. The Pegazair calls for 100hp.

The specs on the Murphy Rebel look better than that one

Re: Tapanee Pegazair

It's a copy of the Zenair 701, with a few changes. The retractable slots will definitely reduce drag in cruise, but they come with a downside in cost, complexity, maintenance, and a little weight. A couple of 701's have been built with Pegazair wings. The Savannah is also a copy of the 701, with a few different changes and upgrades. My guess is that some of the changes to the basic 701 design are good (Savannah's beaded fuselage skin and tailwheel option) and some not so good.

Re: Tapanee Pegazair

I have a Pegazair that I built from plans . Tapanee also sells kits.
I put a 0320 in mine , Tapanee has a up dated plane to up the gross to 1850 that may not be on their site. Their small but great people and great planes!!
While the tail is some what of a copy of a 701 thats about all that is .
It is a great plane and you about have to fly one to understand.
A few years back Eaa had a write up on a 801 with a 180hp 0360 in it. If that write up was true then My 160hp Pegazair with 2 people aboard will best the 180hp 801 with 2 people in all ways by a fair amount, thake off, cruse, and landing .
Check it out!! http://www.ericproellphotography.com/pegazair

Awesome plane Doug, thanks for sharing.

Can you provide some real world performance numbers?

Re: Tapanee Pegazair

Michel at Tapanee is truthfull on his web site. He how ever has not up dated it in a while so cruse with the 160hp lyc. is not there. With 31 inch bushwheels and a 75x53 McCully I am 105 mph at 2300 rph.
I was close to 10 mph faster with 850,s
There is a pegazair in NM with a 0360 and a MT prop and a cleaned up gear that is a lot faster!

Re: Tapanee Pegazair

Wow, that's a gorgeous airplane !

With the retractable wing slats, how much faster is this aircraft than the Zenith 750 or 850? There should be a reasonably significant difference...

I can not speak to the 701 of 750 as I have not been around them . The 801 info I use in a earlyer post was from a old EAA mag write up. But again if that write up was right , I can way out do the 180 hp 801.
The Pegazair,s tail while bigger, is something of a copy off a 701. But other than that not much the same in the two planes. Kind of like saying a Cub and a 150 are a like!
The wing is a much dif. airfoil. Gives me the speed of a 172 and yet I can bet a 180 hp supercub most times in take off! But like all planes there is good and bad. For me , more good in the Peg.!!

Re: Tapanee Pegazair

A local guy in our EAA chapter has a 600' strip at his house & is/was bulding a Pegazair. I think he would rather build it than fly it, because he started re-doing stuff that was already finished. One step forward, 2 steps back kind of deal. I'd never heard of a Pegazair, he told me that it was a sort of modified Zenair 701. His has some sort of fancy-pants computerized car engine in it-- possibly the major reason it has never flown (and probably never will). Too bad, it's a shame to waste all that work, plus I'd like to see how it does.
