taylorcraft bc12d tire size

I have been trying to find info on how big of a tire I can put on a taylorcraft. I found a nice set of 21/800x6 tires that I think would look very good on it and help with rougher area landings but being new to flying and even newer to aircraft ownership I don't know where to find the info on what is or can be approved for it. I would be grateful if someone knows what can fit or point me in the correct direction on where to find the info

Bushwheels are STC'd but expensive. Also may be overkill depending on where you're going, but a 26 ABW airstreak is really nice. 26 Goodyears can be field approved and are less expensive - but are heavy and less flexible. We have those on our TCraft because the airplane came with them. 8.50s are a good compromise, not sure on field approval status.

Keep it light.
Desser 8.50 smoothies are 21-22", 4 ply, lightweight, wear well and worked very good on our 48 7DC Champ. Run them on our 56 182 as well and will buy again whenever they wear out; 2 yrs and not showing much wear although 50/50 on paved vs grass/dirt RWs.

N29873 had McCreary 8.50x6's with some approval basis or other when I owned it. Might still have the paperwork, or find it in a records search. Considering the cable-actuated heel brakes on a BC-12D, that seemed like a reasonable size to run and still have some expectation of stopping power.
Congratulations on your new bird,

I have 8.50's that I field approved years ago. A friend had 26" Bushwheels and loved them, but said he'd go 29's if he ever did it again.

God put me here to accomplish a certain amount of things...right now I'm so far behind, I'll never die!!
The Dresser 8.50's mentioned are the cats meow on a taylorcraft. The Shin brakes if properly adjusted will hold the plane at run up. Forward visibility is still pretty good with them on. For approval, the easiest route is to contact Terry Bowden who is a DER and have him write up an approval. Cost is reasonable and it's the easiest route to get them approved. His contact info is here:
