Texas Backcountry Flying w/pictures?

Hello Backcountry Pilots,
I'm down near Dallas for a helicopter course. Anyway I found some great places to land an airplane on the New Brazos River near Mineral Wells, Texas. This is located on the old Ft. Walters Training area, where the Army provided primary helicopter training during the Viet Nam war. There are lots of very landable gravel bars on the river. Anyway just thought someone might enjoy the pictures.

The New Brazos River near Mineral Wells, TX. Lots of real cool places to land. Wish I was down there with my Maule for a few days.

Re: Texas Backcountry Flying w/pictures?

Super-Maule, thanks for bringing this to others' attention. When I was down at Steve Pierce's maintenance seminar in February, I got dragooned by the Grand Poo-Bah of another well-known website, and got to do some close-up inspection of some Brazos River sandbars, and we weren't the first: There were lots of tracks before us. It's reliably rumoured that a well-known Ohio Backcountry pilot may have been heavily involved, plus an Okie or two... Just be aware that there ARE unmarked wires and stuff crossing the Brazos.

The best yet, I learned a HECK of a lot about Supercub construction and maintenance. The whole Pierce family were terrific hosts.

Hello Cubscout,
Its great someone else has discovered these landing spots too. I saw some tracks but thought they were from a ATV or something. West Texas is covered by deer-stands and feeders, a different world than what I'm accumtomed too. Anyway some real cool landing areas.

Re: Texas Backcountry Flying w/pictures?

James, it was pointed out that the ones relatively close to roads were ATV's. The ones away from roads looked like 31" and 35"ABW with BBW track in the middle

And eeyup, lots of deerstands/whitetails. Also lots of feral pigs which are a REAL problem for farmers/ranchers. A little different approach to pig population "improvement" than we do for 'yotes in the West. (Hint, AR's, night sights, lots of ammo...).

Thanks. cubscout
