The Sacred Mountain

I have been doing my 'Social Distancing" in the plane and took an opportunity to fly around Mt. Diablo "The Sacred Mountain" on a CAVU day recently. Mt. Diablo is the highest point in the San Francisco Bay Area and does have some aviation significance.

The mountain has a rich history and offers many outdoor activities to residents and visitors alike. This short video is not about backcountry flying. It is about using the plane to point out some history of the mountain, the wildlife that reside on the mountain and some historical 'characters' who have used the mountain.

If you decide to watch the video, Please press the Watch on Vimeo button below and the video will open in a new browser tab.

Enjoy

Re: The Sacred Mountain

Good job on the report. It is also a great local history lesson. Most of the tens of thousands of people that live in the area have no idea of the significance of the history or the parts that the mountain played in the settling, mapping and development of the state. This is truly a "Diamond in their Backyard"

Re: The Sacred Mountain

Interesting mountain, fantastic views from the top in decent weather. I used to maintain some equipment in the transmitter site at the top. Wind there can be unreal, the gust that knocked down the 240 foot radio tower was estimated to be over 140 MPH. There are a few wildly different stories about where the name came from. At one time there was a snack bar and restrooms at the top, beside the initial point monument, went there to get lunch after a service call one day and it was gone.

Re: The Sacred Mountain

Thanks for posting your video! I appreciate the detailed description about the history on the mountain. The part about Grizzly Adams is something else. In March 2007 I traveled down there and spent a week getting tail wheel training at Amelia Reed Aviation. We did some flying around Mt. Diablo. It was beautiful in the spring.

Re: The Sacred Mountain

Nothing better then flying by a big peak with an antenna farm on top, and thinking about what it took to get it all up there, as I have done tower work on some peaks myself with my crane. The guys who work and climb those things have my respect! Great vid.
