Things My Wife Says

Hi everybody! My name is Jesse and I'm flying out of NJ. I've been flying about 15 years, mostly C172s, 152s, and Cherokees. I started flying when I was 14, and one of my very first lessons was in a Champ. Since then, I'd always wanted to fly tailwheels again and early this year I finally got my endorsement in a J-3. The most fun you can ever have at 65mph, and now I'm hooked on tailwheels! I was looking for a forum for grassroots, fun, off the beaten path flying and this seems to be the one.

So to the title of my post, I thought I would introduce myself with a few things I'm constantly reminded of by my wife.

I plan on getting my first plane in about one year. I'm leaning heavily toward a piper pacer, but have also considered a cherokee, luscombe, C-140, Citabria etc. All these types drive her crazy. She is very supportive of my passion and enjoys going up with me, but says I am not allowed to buy a plane until I want the same type for at least 3 months? My tailwheel instructor agreed with her when she brought this up at the airport.

The other one is that I would love to build a kit one day. Although pricey to finish, an RV8 really catches my eye. Range, efficient speed, light aerobatics, can carry baggage, "relatively" short field capable, and looks like a little fighter. The wife doesn't like it. She says she doesnt like the bubble because she would feel like George Jetson. Now when I see the plane, all I can think about is the intro to the show!

All those are good. Kind of like marriage.

My theory is that when you decide it is time to get married, you marry the first one you fall in love with. When it is time to buy a plane, you buy the first one you fall in love with. Do a lot of test driving (planes that is).

My guess is that you knew imediatly after you met your wife that this was the one. Same o Saame o

You may share Tim's theory on love with your wife.

I don't know Tim. I've often heard it opined that " ... wish I had met my second wife first."

I'm on my sixth airplane now (Husky A1-B), and it will be my sweetheart to the end -- love my dog (...and my wife too)!

I've only had one wife, and still have 'er after 41 years. First thing in the morning I tell her, "I love you, Honey", and she says, "You can't afford a divorce". Keeps us together.

Of planes, on the other hand, I've owned six - five of those at the same time. Still have three, but like Nizina, the Husky A1-B is my favorite.

Re: Things My Wife Says

Good luck on finding the perfect airplane. My Second wife ( still paying for the first one) gets mad and tells me to go and visit my other girl friends . My others are 1946 Cessna 120 (AKA Julia) and 1961 Cessna 175(AKA RoseMary). She still wants only one other girl friend and that will happen one of these day.
Try to find something that will meets you mission and that you can afford to use. Something that is very pretty and sets in the hanger all the time will get you a second wife.
The sun is out, -2 degrees and I still can not get the hanger doors to open..

Wife says as long as I have just one of her I can have as many planes as I want. Just one of the many reasons she's a keeper and I'd never consider another woman.

I've also got her convinced that tools are "off budget" as far as my toy account is concerned! :D

My wife said "Fly it or sell it". The choice was easy.

I fly out of Somerset, SMQ at the moment. Took my tailwheel lessons at Andover (highly recommended for anyone thinking about it).

Re: Things My Wife Says

When it comes to flying airplanes, I'm an aspiring swinger. I loved my 170B but I sold it to buy a house, and now am shopping kits to build. In the meantime I'm going to "love" as many different ones as I can. It helps to have good buddies with an assortment of taildraggers. So far I've managed to try out an 8GCBC, a Rans S-7, a Piper J-3, and a Maule M7. :)

I'm still working on the buddies with the Husky and the 180.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

Re: Things My Wife Says

I am on No. 5 airplane and No. 1 wife(16 yrs). Buy a plane and fly it. Sell it if you're tired of it and fly another and keep going umtil you're quite satisfied. I started with a Cherokee, bought a Twin Commanche, then a Shortwing Clipper and then a Pacer and now I am on a 172 taildragger. I always set out to get one and come back with another. Last time I was out to get a C 180 and came home with the taildragger 172. Next I'm looking for something on floats. I'll probably come home with a Pitts. I'm trying to own about 100. If marriage and plane ownership were synonymous, I would be a cheatin fool.

I'm on my second plane and my first wife. Whoops, that didn't come out right, but Wow, didn't know it was such a big deal to import a plane from the US. Both of mine have come out of Canada. The first one was the 701 from back in the bush near Dawson Creek, BC. Test flew off the private strip the morning of 9/11/01,no radios, and neither the owner or me knew we were under attack or that the rest of the planes in the US and Canada were grounded. Trailered it back across the border myself two days later. It went pretty good after the dogs climbed through the pickup and plane and searched every loose article US agents had thrown out on the ground and considering they had just told me they would seize the plane. But other than that, deregistration from CAA and reregistration to FAA took about two months total. Second one was the Tundra, never was registered in Canada but the main portion of the kit I built there and just freighted it back to the US. Though I had a lot of fun with the 701 I wish I had skipped all that excitement and just met my second plane first. Oh, I forgot, I was blinded by love.

Lynn Sanderson (Dirtstrip) passed away from natural causes in May 2013. He was a great contributor and will be missed dearly.

Re: Things My Wife Says

I have a slow engineer doing the import. Export from Canada can go a lot quicker than importing into Canada.
Also there was some missing paper work we were trying to find or work around. One of the major 337s missing was the Carry Through Assembly for the wing.
I think we are just about there though. [-o<
I had to import my wife too and it took about 5 years to do that.
