That's more like it. I'm going to email them to see if they have any built close enough to go see one. The design my neighbor is going to do looks like the Horton door, like an accordion.

Did you hear back from these folks, find one close to you? If you want to go on a long cross-country to see one, head to the Coulee Dam Airport. 3W7 Electric City WA It has been in service a long time.

Washington? That's a heck of a trip. They actually emailed me Friday night and gave the info on a hangar door kit they sold to a couple about an hour away by car. If it were an airport I'd just fly there or drive by but as per Google Earth there's nothing but trees in that area so the address might be just their mailing address and they have the hangar doors somewhere else so we're going to contact the owners to go see it this week.

Just an idea, quick and short, i put a 15 ft 5 inch steel post in the ground on the ends of the door opening, attached at the top of the post to the hangar,, theres no weight on the building whatsoever, but big round baler belting accross the bottom of the doors, cemented in the poles, made 2 bifold doors, like your closets out of 2x2x1/8 inch square tubing, used menards barn tin, maybe a $1000 dollars in the doors total. Went 44 ft rafters over the door opening, make sure if rafters built there is up and down braces every 4 ft so sheets of plywood works out, used 2 rafters, $900 dollars delivered for both 70 miles, they were 5 ft tall, menards sells 5ft x 8ft plywood. Layer of plywood in the front and a layer between the 2 rafters. I really like it and would do it again. I can stand on the door at the farthest out point and it dosent move a 1/2 inch.

A friend of mine built one of these for his hangar. It's maybe 45' wide, and maybe 10' tall.
Works really well -- hand-powered boat winch and counterweight for easy up-and-down, no power required
Translucent door panels make it pretty light inside, plus take advantage of solar heating on clear but chilly days.
Don't know how much he's got in it, but he's notoriously cheap so probably not much.

I haven't updated anything on here in a while... I've made some progress but against what all the naysayers said I am in fact kicking myself in the shorts for not making it 40' wide. Any way, here are some pictures of the progress.
