Thoughts on io520 ohauled in 89' with 800 hrs

Looking at a 206 .....800 hrs smoh ........overhauled in 89'..... I don't like the sound of it either. Compressions last annual all in the 70s....good price for the plane....( I think)I don't like engines or airplanes that sit around a lot , I know from experience that things fall apart on airplanes when they are not exercised .Anyone have experience on a 520 that sat for awhile?I have owned two different 520 engines and loved them both with all my heart.They were everyday flyers and never had any issues with them................

Subtract 15K for a top from the purchase price and you should be good, eh? Or maybe it's priced right already.

Can't kill the bottom end on those things, you should be good to go.

Borescope, newfangled probe camera, inspection mirror.

Find a way to look at the cam, lifters, cylinder walls. If the engine was inside and is not pitted and corroded, you have a good chance at a good engine. If it is pitted in certain spots then you can factor in a top, or a cam, or whatever into your negotiations.

Cams on Continentals are typically not a problem, since they're on the bottom of the engine, not the top like Lycoming.

You might have to top the thing after you run it some, but I wouldn't worry too much about the bottom end.

All above but it also depends on how it has been stored. In a hanger in Povidance, RI is much worse than on the ramp in AZ when it comes to rusty cylindars.

My personal method of waking them back up is;

1. Marvel mystery oil in every tankful of fuel for the first 200 hours

2. Marvel in the oil between 3-5 hours BEFORE the oil changes on every other oil change for the first 200 hours

3. Run it hard and don't try to skimp on fuel, burn it (GAMI's, lean of peak, all that crap can come later)

4. Rebuild any baffling that looks sub-par to keep things on the up and up where the cooling is concerned.

5. Do the first 200 in 12 months! The best part!

That has gotten me through some "old" overhauls that have sat, even woke up a couple of soft cylinders on the exhaust side of things.
