Three Forks Montana fly- in, this weekend!

Besides all the cool airplanes that always show up, the hotly contested spot landing contest (at least by me) and comic relief bomb drop is a blast. From my part of SE Idaho, my biggest problem in getting there is, which incredibly scenic route should I take? Like picking off the dessert cart at a fine restaurant, there are no wrong choices.

Looks like tomorrow AM. But.....WX may be iffy. Hopefully, if bad, it will be bad enough not to make me struggle on go/no go. I don't mind missing an event when its a no brainer NOT to go, its the in between conditions that make it a tough call I hate. I was craning by Mackay today, very poor viz, combo of smoke and low clouds, and hard to tell which was which.

Addison Pemberton made it in today with the Boeing Model 40 from Spokane. Weather that direction was good he said.

Hope to see you there tomorrow.

I didn't see Alan, unfortunately. I did meet up with Courierguy, however, and had a great chat with him. Lots of planes there on Saturday, and quite a few people. Great prime rib dinner cooked by Bob Green in the evening. All in all a great time.

MTV: did you check that sky out to the south the next morning? I headed out that way for a look see, saw lightning....then decided to slip by Bozeman and maybe hole up in Livingston till it cleared a bit. Another lightning strike a few miles away made me thing maybe Butte was a better alternative. Flew through some rain, made a quick stop there and then pushed on to Dillon, then Dell, and then Dubois where more lightning made me think it was a good time for breakfast. The electric bike got me to the great local cafe in a couple minutes, and I took my time eating. When I got back it had cleared a bit. Then aimed towards Blackfoot, once there decided to push on to my place 27 miles away. Got there and it was 28 with gusts over 30 mph direct cross for my 18' x 400' wide runway, my wind turbine was maxxed out, 2500 watts, and that only happens when its 30 or so. For the first time in years I passed on it, just ran out of rudder, and instead used the rolling cut hay field across the road from my shop. A neighbor wing walked me back to my driveway and finally I was home, quite a flight! Big tires, open country pretty much, and a slow landing airplane made me feel pretty good about pushing it a bit, I always had an option for turning around and/or setting down. No way would I have kept going in a fast small tired plane, got a motel room I guess.

Looks like a nice day in this picture, it wasn't! Image

Yep, I was sure thinking about you and Addison both. It was nastier than cat shit over Bozeman early, but then cleared up and was windy in the PM.

Glad you figured it out and got home okay without too much thrashing about. And it was good meeting you.
